Announcing the FIRST New York Netrunner tournament, December 15!
We are excited to announce the FIRST New York Netrunner tournament! This tournament will be hosted and sponsored by The Compleat Strategist.

When: Saturday, December 15th. Registration at 10am-10:30am.
Where: The Compleat Strategist, 11 East 33rd Street (between Madison and Fifth Avenue).
Entry fee: The entry fee is $5 and will be used to cover the prizes.

The tournament’s Meetup page can be found here:

http://www.meetup.com/Netrunner-NYC/events/93374112/

Please RSVP via Meetup, PM me, email (el.ad.david.amir@gmail.com) or call me (347-994-9332) or The Compleat Strategist. You are not required to RSVP in order to play; it would just make our lives easier as far as organization is concerned.

Prizes
FIRST place: 1) A custom set of four BIG APPLE ACTION TOKENS. These limited edition tokens are made by byronczimmer and will ONLY be awarded to winners of New York tournaments. 2) A voucher for “What Lies Ahead”, the first Netrunner Data Pack.
SECOND place: A voucher for “What Lies Ahead”.
(Vouchers redeemable at The Compleat Strategist when Data Pack is released. Additional prizes might be available at the discretion of The Compleat Strategist and depending on the number of participants.

Format
This will be a THREE CORE SET tournament. This means that you can use up to three copies of each card. You cannot use cards from “What Lies Ahead”. We will follow Fantasy Flight Games’ Official Tournament Rules. The tournament will be between three and four rounds of Swiss, depending on the number of participants. Each round will be 65 minutes. The Swiss rounds will be followed by a Top 2 Finals.

I am looking forward for the tournament and know that New York will reach a magnificent number of attendees!!

Nah, that could not have happened since you would have participated in the final matches Fear not, I will record them. I'm actually contemplating the option of taking a video. I don't know how popular these are, though.

See this text? It's a gratuitous waste of GeekGold.

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

Will "What Lies Ahead" be legal? It should be out by then.

Edit: The answer is "no," as is mentioned in the fine text above.

Indeed. Since the release date is close to the tournament date, I did not want to give some people an unfair advantage.

Unfortunately not. I hope high attendance will allow us to procure support for the next tournament.

If I won the voucher... could I use it at the compleat strategist in Falls Church VA, since that's probably where I would pick up this expansion pack anyways.

If you come to the tournament and win the voucher then I will make sure that you get the expansion pack (if you can't use the New York voucher at Falls Church I will ship the data pack to you myself).

Also, if you do drive for four hours, please get a bunch of friends to come as well

Re: expansion packs and tournaments.

FFG usually has a 30 day minimum from street date requirement.

What Lies Ahead would have to have been released by Nov 15 to allow inclusion.

How far away from Union Station Penn Station (aka Amtrak Central) is Compleat Strategist?

And after a quick check, a 10:00am registration means same day travel is doable, but quite expensive.

$$$$ Train Depart-Arrive Dur Train Name
$141 162 06:20 - 09:42 (3:22) Northeast Regional
$141 54 07:30 - 10:43 (3:13) Vermonter
$141 152 08:10 - 11:45 (3:35) Northeast Regional
$224 2250 09:00 - 11:52 (2:52) Acela Express

Return trips are about the same price buckets, except for the red-eye at $49.

Amtrak's funny that way - they bucket their tickets, so if you know months in advance it's cheap as sin, but if you wait until 2-3 weeks before you pay through the nose.

Not far at all. You'll have to walk cross-town, but Penn Station is 34th St. and Compleat Strategist is on 33rd. 10 minutes walk at a brisk pace tops.

It is about a ten minute's walk.

I don't know if it's relevant, but you might be able to carpool with serdudds (if three or four of you come from the Washington area it would be super awesome!!). Of course, it means you would have to leave VA quite early.

If you do intend to show up, please email me at el.ad.david.amir@gmail.com. We will do the registration through the phone which means you can arrive around 10:30 or even 10:45.

(And as stated above, if you win a Data Pack I will ship it to you when it's out)

I intend to announce future tournaments at least a month in advance. Hopefully it will allow people from outside of New York to get tickets for a cheaper price.

Just checked, a month in advance might not be enough. Alright then, if this tournament works well, I will announce the tournament schedule for the first quarter of 2013 in advance.

Amtrak's buckets open 11 months in advance.

And there aren't that many 'cheap seats' in those buckets.

duds and I will chat this weekend. See if we're crazy enough to drive (and [shudder] park) in NYC.

Crossing my fingers. If it's one car, parking should be reasonable.

I'm considering flying in from Tulsa, OK. I will know in the next few days and if I did come, I'd probably bring a friend.

Any ideas about reliable (but preferably cheap) places to stay?

Eekh, New York is always tricky in that regard. May I ask how much are you guys willing to spend? And would you consider a boarding-house style, or do you want a hotel?

We're not picky. Last time we stayed at a hostel (Jazz in the Park or something) and it was fine, but it never hurts to ask for advice from locals. Under 100 would be ideal... but maybe not realistic.

Then you shouldn't have a problem finding a location- I'm afraid I don't have concrete suggestions, though (I would just google it...).

UGHHH I'm out of town this weekend!

My office is just a few blocks from there too!

Side note: anyone interested in playing some NR in the Chelsea area, let me know. Always looking for more players to add to my group.
