BGWS 028 - Video exploration of Timbuktu / Tombouctou
This week, I take a look at the deduction game, Timbuktu.

In this 17-minute video, I explore the game, explain how to play, and briefly review it.

You can watch the video or listen to the audio at

http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?p=46
Note: My server seems to be acting a bit funny. If you have a hard time getting in, try http://www.archive.org/details/bgws_028

Note:

The first BGWS DVD is now available. I've filled it full of videos, with episodes 1-9 and a special episode on Aquadukt (which has not been previously released anywhere else). You can purchase it at
http://www.customflix.com/Store/ShowEStore.jsp?rtnPt=0&id=21...

I'm trying to raise some funds to purchase new equipment and offset costs. I've also put at PayPal donate button on the http://boardgameswithscott.com site if you'd like to help that way.

Cool. I'll definitely be chekcing this one out. I got this game back in June, at the urging of Frank Branham, who said, "this game is so nice, I bought it twice,"

OK, so maybe not those exact words, but close enough.

Of course, that was back in June. I bought it, punched, applied the stickers, and read the rules...but still haven't played it. Sigh...

I enjoyed the video, Scott. I have to disagree with your statement that it is a deduction game. Deduction games are won by making correct deductions and good guesses, but this game only indirectly rewards deductions. it is at least as much about bluffing as about deductions.

I would describe it as a set-collection game before describing as either a bluffing game or a deduction game, however.

I AM DARWIN, DESTROYER OF CAMELS!

Another great episode. My girlfriend was interested in this (pretty camels), and now I can have her watch and decide if she thinks would like it before paying for it!

Thanks again, Scott. Keep up the great work!

One of the decisions I have to make with a game is how to present it to brand new people.

For a group of new players, Timbuktu is more about deduction than anything else.

Only with several plays do people begin using the bluffing strategy, and if everyone at the table has played it, then the bluffing element comes into play.

But even with that, the primary thing you need to do in the game is still deduction. The new piece of the puzzle is "are you bluffing"? So, it's actually adding in game theory thinking to the deduction, as you need to consider the chances that someone would make a certain move given their camel situation and their previous actions.

All of that said, the audience for BGWS is people whom have not played the game. For people new to the game, it is a deduction game. I alluded to the fact that people can bluff in the video, but I did not choose to go into details, as it would have confused people whom have not tried the game yet.

It's a similar challenge to teaching any game which has hidden strategies, and the game changes when all players know those strategies. Shotten-Totten, for example, has a hidden strategy of information control. But I find when I teach it, trying to teach that before the first play just confuses people. It only makes sense after a few hands of play.

So, just as when I teach the same topic at the undergrad, masters, and Ph.D. level, there are times in teaching when you simplify reality to the point of being false to those whom have significant knowledge in a topic.
