Ramping up my reviewing.
Happily playing games for many, many years.
By the end of this game of Thebes, I was the most respected expert on Mesopotamia in the world. Not only due to my extensive research on the subject, but also due to the amount of time I spent sharing it with the world at the archaeologist conventions they held every so often on the continent.
The fact that Josh had actually been to Mesopotamia and unearthed many rare and ancient relics there had no bearing on the universal agreement of my expertise on the matter. Unfortunately, Josh's delvings into the site - and his subsequent exhibition - did matter a lot when it came to the final score, as his doubled mine.
I do feel I missed part of the point of this game.
I did go on digs, it's just that I was unlucky. I was the first to reach Egypt, but I only found a scant smattering of artifacts. It was Rich who researched it well, and then came home with the loot.
And I was the only person in the world - apart from Randy - to go to Crete. Unfortunately, I was working from a note handed to me by a friend of a friend of someone I'd never heard of, whilst Randy had the complete collection of "Where to Dig in Crete", and came away with many a valuable treasure.
Rich and Josh were extremely lucky in their early digs - coming up with far more treasures than sand. Rich faded in the late game as Randy ascended. I just attended congress and read about Mesopotamia.
Here are the scores we achieved for each part of the game. +5 indicates being the world expert on the subject; the basic score is for treasure retrieved:
Greece - Josh 21+5, Rich 8, Randy 4
Mesopotamia - Josh 16, Rich 7, Merric 2+5
Crete - Randy 15+5, Merric 3
Egypt - Rich 16+5, Randy 8, Merric 8
Palastine - Josh 14+5, Randy 18, Rich 2
Congress - Merric 15, Randy 3, Rich 1, Josh 1
Exhibitions - Randy 9, Josh 4, Rich 4.
Josh 66, Randy 62, Rich 43, Merric 33
I really enjoy Thebes, but for my first multiplayer game, I spent too much time getting poor cards rather than digging. Need to play again!
I just had a similar experience in my first play of Thebes, Merric. I went crazy grabbing cards and maxed out on accumulating Conferences/Congresses (whatever the card is called). By the time I got around to doing any digging, the loot was mostly gone. Like you--and many of my former college professors--I had many academic accolades but little field-work under my belt. And no VPs to show for it!

Great report... thanks Merric!
