BGWS 048 - Video exploration of Saikoro
On this episode of Board Games with Scott, I take a look at Saikoro, a 2-player abstract game with a board made of dice that disappears as the game continues.

You can see this video at
http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?p=84

or on Vimeo below

P.S. I'm aware that the audio is a bit staticy in parts; I've ordered a new microphone. I'm also aware that the white box threw off the color, and I'm figuring that out, too. If I turn off the Auto-white balance, I also turn off the auto-focus (as I learned last time the hard way). Ah, the joys of learning new equipment.

It seems as thought that last two episodes (this and TransAmerica) were not posted to the iTunes feed. Meaning I didn't even know there were new episodes till now. Are you stopping the feed for now, or is it just a slip up? Thanks, I always love the show.

Hmm. I don't know. I'll look into it.

Once you sign up for iTunes, you don't post anything "to" the feed - it extracts information from your feed about the shows. So, it's not something I've done or haven't done; when something goes wrong, it's because something in the chain of
Blog post -> Feedburner -> iTunes has changed in the way it extracts the files.

It's looking like something is goofy with my file types. I thought I resolved this issue with the 18xx episode, but clearly I didn't. Grr, I hate this part.

Edit - OK, now go to your iTunes feed, right-click on Board Games with Scott, and choose "Update". The new ones should appear, and perhaps the older ones, too.

Like every one of your videos, I can’t wait to watch this one Scott. More importantly, I can’t wait for my fiancé to watch this, as almost every game you’ve featured on BGWS has resulted in a comment along the lines of “That looks interesting, let’s think about getting that one.” The one exception to this was Die Macher, as she couldn’t see past the prospect of a 3 hour game.

I can attribute my purchases of Vegas Showdown, To Court a King, Ticket to Ride, Wits and Wagers, Apples to Apples, Attribute, and Lost Cities at least in part to your video series. Keep up the great work – no one has the enthusiasm or ability to explain a game quite like you do.

Great episode Scott! While I always enjoy the longer episodes, this shorter piece was fun and covered the game well in a short amount of time.

"An AMAZING episode of Board Games with Scott with the complexity of Lost and the hard hitting crime drama of Law and Order!":D

That's an interesting coincidence Scott.

I was searching around for random games, and came across this game randomly and noticed it had all of 2 ratings. I send messages to the two raters because it seemed like an interesting game... didn't get too much information unfortunately.

Now, you've done a video on the thing, and it's boosted to 6 rating! Amazing!

I shall watch the video later, and am very much looking forward to it. See what the game's about :)

Have you tried to put a lamp aimed at you? That is how is usually done in order to offset any light/dark objects you're trying to shoot together in the same scene. Spotlights can be expensive but you should be able to find a suitable lamp to do the same at your local hardware store (Home Depot) or even Walmart.

Hmm... I don't know. Do you really need autofocus?
I'd give up on that if the lighting on the scene wouldn't vary that much.

Anyway, thanks for the show, I'm always looking forward to it.
It's the best there is. Highly informative and quite fun to watch. xD

Maybe sell some promotional Blue Scott bobbleheads to raise funds for the show! I'd buy one.

Also, good to find another Good Eats fan! Down with unitaskers!

Just so you know, vimeo hosted videos REQUIRE flash 9 to play. Yeah I know, I need to upgrade from my flash 8, but not everyone has flash 9.

Vimeo is just there for conveniences. The videos are primarily hosted at the Internet Archive in various downloadable formats, and you get to those through

Scott, you made a mistake (or did you cheat a little? :) ) with black's move at 6:40-6:47. These actually were 6 spaces that you moved :)
Nice game though, and nice review- as always!

Good luck,

As usual, a great review. As you point out, this game compares itself with chess, checkers, and go (With the complexity of Chess, the speed of Draughts and the elegance of Go, saikoro™). These classic abstract strategy games don't have luck, except maybe on who goes first. Any game where it is possible (although unlikely) where you can lose on the first move, probably shouldn't compare itself to the big three. The game looks clever and I'm looking forward to playing, but the possibility of one side being luckier than the other bothers me a bit. It's possible the best player in the world could lose to a first-time player.

Thanks for the review, I'm looking forward to the next one.

Your opening comments about unnecessary hyperbole is a commentary on my life in TV and radio marketing. Make the logo look like logo from this movie, reference things like the promo from that TV show, use terminology familiar to fans of such-and-such, etc.

I know we don't love it, but it does help attract certain people who may not have the patience to investigate something based solely on its unique merits. In regards to Saikoro, it is quite possible that some grandparent will see the mention of chess, draughts or go and think that it sounds like a good game for the grandkids, etc.

Marketing... Blah, alas, it is my life.
