I went up to visit my friends Riva and Glen, I haven't seen them in about a year so I brought some games up with me. I know that Riva loves board games so I was going to continue my BBG civic duty of getting more people to play german games. I brought up Settlers and Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers.

Saturday Allen, Glen, Riva, and myself played two or three games of Settlers. I have taught people this game several times now and I have detected a pattern of comments. They normally come in about this order.

What is this game about?

That sounds boring.

This looks complicated.

What are development cards for?

Do I have to move the robber?

Do you have any ore?

This game is great.

Well that was about the order of comments from the group this time. The wins were pretty evenly divided on Saturday, but the epic moment came on Sunday. Allen didn't play these games, but Riva and Glen really wanted another crack at it. So we set up the card table in Riva's office and started playing. We had a good variety of board layouts, the first game was ore short, the second game was brick short, the third game went so fast that I didn't get a feel for it. Glen was hot, winning all three games. The first two were nice very close battles, while the last one was a horrible blowout the likes of which I have never seen. I think Riva and I both managed to get to four or five points by the time that Glen won. Humiliation!

They liked the game enough that they are going to buy it. Another family that doesn't have to play monopoly anymore, the world feels at peace.
