BGWS 060 - Battlestar Galactica: The Reality Show
It's Reality TV meets Board Games!

On this special episode of Board Games with Scott, I take a look at Battlestar Galactica as though it was a Reality show. Find out what the players are thinking in the Confessional. My focus is on the social component of the game and not the mechanics.

You can watch this episode at http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?p=265
or watch it right here:

Note: This was a ton of work, so don't expect this on a regular basis! The quality is also lower because I couldn't control the environment nearly as well as I normally can.

Alright! I was hoping you would do this one! I'll finally have a video I can show new players to hopefully give them the basics.

I've been waiting to see more taped game sessions; hope future episodes have this as well.

Given that:
1 - I had to coordinate 7 people's schedules together to get a 5-hour block of time

2 - I had to try and coordinate 3 cameras in different rooms, each with different audio inputs and levels

3 - I had to pick through about 12 hours of footage from these different cameras and try to balance them to make them look somewhat similar.

4 - Then I had to match them on their timing, along with one 5-hour recording from a microphone. This is when I learned that the tape camera runs ever-so-slightly slower than the digital camera, so they had to be manually resynced every so often.

So.....don't expect it.

See this picture?

It's the timeline for the episode. Every block you see had to be placed, trimmed, and balanced. That takes an insane amount of time.

I had my doubts about this game because I'm very suspicious of tv or movie tie ins. Although I loved the show, I was afraid this was just a quick cash in by the producers. Some of the written reviews allayed my fears, but it helped to see the game played out. Thanks for all the hard work, Scott. This review may have won me over.

Makes complete sense. It sounds like a huge ordeal; doesn't anybody (or hasn't anybody offered) help you out?

I did have help - I had all of the players, and Logan behind the scenes. I also had a bunch of people watch it and give comments as to what was problematic.

The timesink isn't in the creation and the filming.

It's in the editing, and as anyone who had editing video can tell you, it is long and tedious. I probably dumped 40 hours of editing time on this episode. But I am really impressed with the game, so it was out of passion for the game.

So, I've had help on creation and help on reviewing, and I don't want to belittle that. It's the editing side that's the monster.

How did that approach change the overall flow/focus of this particular episode? Will you be doing "beta" testing in the future once again?

I loved the format. By showing actual gameplay, I got a much better impression of the game experience. I'd really like to see this format more often. Well done!

Scott, that was very creative what you did, i don't believe i have seen it done before in board game reviews. Personally i have found it to be extremely helpful in deciding if i want to buy a game by watching my fellow group members play the game and examining the experience, flow of play, and the attitude of the players. Normal video reviews cannot really capture that as well as what you just did.

Its quite obvious that this type of format is time consuming and i don't expect to see it again( :(:(:( ) and i don't blame you...

however, in future episodes, it might be less work if a group and yourself briefly describe the rules to the audience WHILE YOU PLAY in front of the camera. You need not to explain all of the rules just like before and this meathod can capture the same elements of your previous episode.

Obviously you would skip around (due to length) how you like to point out key plays or event in the game....after the game is over, each player can describe their view on the game. Wrapping it up with your thoughts.

Actually, I used to do that for every episode. (you'll see BGWS Beta testers in the credits for those episodes). When I streamlined my processes and shortened the episodes about 5 episodes ago, I dropped that as part of the process, as it added a lot of time (about 4-5 days) between filming and being done with it.

For this one, I put out a special call for folks with no BSG experience (show or game) to get feedback, and they offered questions on things that weren't clear.

I really enjoyed this episode Scott. Adding the reality/story element to showing how the game is played made it entertaining in a different way than your regular shows. I like your regular episodes a lot, but I would certainly enjoy seeing this style done again. As you said, it is very time consuming, so I won't expect to see it often. Keep up the good work, and a thank you to the players! :)

Finally had a chance to watch the whole episode - great job Scott. Excellent concept for this type of game.
Hats off to you on the editing and putting it all together. Just looking at the one screen shot makes me queasy.

Absolutely wonderful episode, Scott. I was impressed watching the game the second time through to try to pick up any hints from the player *that was a cylon* to see if there were any noticeable "tells" from that player.

Absolutely fantastic.
I had never even heard of you before about 2 hours ago when I stumbled across your Smallworld video. (I watched this video to make sure my friends and I were playing the game properly... we did play it correctly and we really don't like it.)

I watched your BSG video and decided that I must get this game.
I never thought I'd enjoy a co-op board game, or a movie/tv tie in game, but this video makes this game look insanely fun!
I can't wait to get this game and play it.

I also can't wait to watch the rest of your videos!
