Team Geekdō is #1 (well 1%) but still needs your help!

Folding@Home is a distributed computing project designed to further the understanding of protein folding and other molecular dynamics related to protein misfolding and the related disorders such as Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's, and many Cancers. It is currently managed by Stanford University's chemistry department.

The cool thing about this being a distributed project is that anyone anywhere in the world can contribute processor time to help. Doc Robot created Team Geekdō and got our effort started back in August and since then we have had about 124 BGG users join the Team and have managed to rise in the rankings to the top 1% of all Teams in the project!

But we need your help now. It only took us about 6 weeks to get to 1% (currently that is 1657th) but to get any higher will be much harder! And to help us recruit more people, there will now be an incentive program to reward people that help with GG (i'll detail this below).

So how do you join Team Geekdō? All you need to do is download one of the clients for your appropriate computer. They have clients for Mac OS X, Linux, Windows, and PS3 available for single processor, multi-processor, and graphics cards. You can find the them on their downloads page. Be sure that when you setup your client that you create a username and that you specify the Team Geekdō team number which is 169927, if you don't then the work you do will not be credited to our team. Also once you have at least one Work Unit (WU), please update the Geekdō Folding@Home Wikipage so that we can match your F@H username to your username here, give you the microbadge and give you the GG from the incentive program and join the Team Geekdō Guild

Their wiki has some good info as well as the Folding@home wikipedia page. I am not going to inline this video, but for those that want some more info on a windows install, check this youtube video out.

So what's this about an incentive program? Here's how that's going to work: on a monthly basis I'm going to tally the individual contributions of each participant (score not WU since our ranking is based on score and WUs are not all created equal). The top contributor will get 10 GG the bottom contributor will get 5 GG everyone else will fall on a curve between those two points. I will not be included in this program. This is all subject to change, but if you have a problem with this scheme, please don't complain in this thread, just geekmail me and we can discuss it. (I will be sending out the August rewards as soon as I have them figured up)

September is not yet over, so if you can complete a WU before the end of the month, you will be at least guaranteed 5 GG

Thanks and keep folding!

To all those who have trouble uploading, my problem was that Windows Firewall had not allowed Folding@home.

Control Panel- Windows Firewall - Exceptions Tab - Add new program and VOILA! When I restarted F@H it uploaded no probs.

While I don't normally support this Folding@Home program, I do support receiving GG, so I'll help out.

Sounds good. I haven't been using Folding@Home for a while because my PS3 heats up my entire room in a few hours, but now I'll have an excuse to let it run for a few work units. Cool stuff!

I just want to mention again why I like folding@home more than something like SETI@home. Folding proteins is something that will likely have a beneficial effect on humanity's health in the near future. When I do folding, I feel like I'm contributing to something that will see fruition in my life time. Like contributing to world health.
And unlike some other distributed computing projects, it doesn't just benifit a single company (usually monetarily)

SETI will probably only make a differance if someone else is out there. And if they are, do we want to take a chance on them invading if we try to initiate contact?

Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won't either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart.

I still don´t know why on earth we call it Team BoardGameGeek. It should be Team GeekDo.

I'm ok with folding proteins as long as we don't use any positive results to help illegal aliens.shake

Helping aliens, that sounds more like SETI@home stuff.

Jeez...

I *think* it's running. Mac Intel = no viewer.

Since the 'stats' page doesn't update very often, I guess I'll find out if it uploaded properly... in about three hours.

'Folding@home running (auto-start)'

...is all the info I have access too.

Doesn't exist.

Also, there is an app in my applications folder: Folding@home.app

Attempting to run this gives this message:

'You can't open the application 'Folding@home.app' because it is not supported on this architecture.'

I note that the intel Mac package I downloaded from their site is only two days old. And inoperable, it seems.

Pity.

does the directory exist, just not the log file? the directory should be in the Library folder in your home directory, not the system Library folder. if the directory exists, but is empty, then the client has never started. you can check that it is running by looking for some "FahCore_a2.exe" processes in the activity monitor

you are not supposed to be able to run that file directly. you start and stop the app via the system preferences panel

i've downloaded the same package and it works fine for me, so i don't think its the package, unless it is just reacting oddly with your system. i am at 10.6.1

Ok. Home folder = users folder. Found it (even though a 'search' of the entire hard drive didn't. Weird.)

Fingers crossed, then.

Thanks for the help.

I've been folding for 'some time' now but I don't see my username on the Team Stats page
The icon for F@H says 'Working (204/300)'.
Anyone knows what the problem is?
My username is TheIcedOne and as teamnumber I have 169927.

Yeah, my icon says 150/500. I have no idea what this means. I also don't show up as a team member.
