It takes a lot to get your homestead started in the Old West. Well, at least we think it must have.

And it’s great to see the kids start to get a glimpse into what it would have taken to start your homestead and get it growing back then.

Various elements keep you engaged

Deciding what you want to construct, how much you’re willing to pay, how to allocate your workers, when you should trade at the market place and when you should pass - Homesteaders is definitely a game to keep you engaged in the many facets of building in the Old West.

Is Homesteaders a good board game for the whole family?
While it’s a good game to play with the family, it isn’t for everyone in the family. Once the kids start to get a grip on resource management, they can give Homesteaders a try. And yes, the littler kids do think the cows are cute.

Kid’s Rating: 8/10
Dad’s Rating: 7/10 Good fun with the older kids - they have no problem beating dad.

Thanks to Tasty Minstrel Games for a copy of Homesteaders to review.

Great review!
It gives a pretty good "taste" of the game, without going too much in detail inside the rules!
I'll have to take a look at your other reviews!

Just a minor issue: you should try to find a way to zoom better... When the kids are talking about a specific component, the component itself isn't clearly viewable (at least on my monitor...)!

Keep doing the good work!

Thanks for the suggestions on getting in closer on the components. We'll work on that.

And yes, we don't plan to cover all the rules in the games - those are left to be discovered in play. We want to focus on just enough rules/gameplay to be able to say why we like/dislike a game.

I love your review of Homesteaders!

I got the impression that perhaps you thought you had to win a Residential auction to build your Homestead... just in case any viewers also thought that, I'll mention that in fact each player start with a Homestead in play.

Indeed, if you didn't, the beginning of the game would be quite slow, and you'd have to take a lot of debt!

Thanks for the clarification Seth.

Hehe.

If you didnt play with a Homestead to start, you havent actually played the game yet, imo. Gaining wood and money from the homestead is critical to being able to do anything, especially early on.
