Ra the dice game is a quick paced, short, and great game to play on any lunch hour. The game consists of a board, small colored cubes for each player(2-4), five colored dice to roll, and a small marker "Ra", the figuring who controls the length of the game. The board consist a basic outer score keeper, a length a the top upon which "Ra" moves to control how long each round, or epoch, in the game will last, and four areas on the board where players can either win or lose points throughout the game. Players can earn points each epoch by either having the most pharos, having flooded niles, or having at least three civilizations. Players can also earn points at the end of the game, after three epochs, by the amount of monuments they have which are obtained throughout the entire game of course. Each turn each player rolls the dice which have civilizations, monuments, pharos, niles, Ras, or ankhs on them. Ankhs are wild and can be paired along with any other rolled dice. Ras are to move Ra further down the length line, however if three Ras are rolled the player automatically obtains three points, and if four Ras are rolled the player gets to choose between three disasters to plague upon another player. All other possible rolls are just used for what they are. Monuments get you monuments, pharos get you pharos etc.. Then again you need at least three civilization rolls to get one civilization, you need to flood you nile(which takes three niles) in order to earn points for your number of niles. Each player gets three chances to re-roll the dice of their choosing in order to obtain the roll they want.

It all sounds rather complicated when there are so many different ways to earn points and so many and so many ways you can't earn points. Not to mention the ways you can lose points each epoch(not having a civilization or having the least amount of pharos). I assure you that it is not all that difficult. After one alert minded game you will be ready to race into the next one determined to conquer. By that third game the rules will be burned into your mind forever.

So what makes Ra so great might you ask!!??!! The game becomes very quick paced and almost mindlessly addictive. Its qualities reminded me of one of my other most favorite quick lunch hour games called Lost Cities (the card game). It is a game that allows for light conversation in between plays. It can be stopped and picked up at the dropped of a hat. It is a great game if you really enjoy fun competition like I do. There are ways you can casually screw over your opponents whenever you are or aren't earning points for yourself. It is light and perfect for a laugh. Seeing as how I am still fairly new to the gaming world I find that I would be a fantastic game to reel a non-gamer into if you are bored.

My friend always know to bring it for a quick game now the same way he used to bring along Lost Cities, and while I would put other longer play, more strategic games a bit higher on my list of favorites, I would easily replace one of their plays with five games of "Ra". If you are a bigger fan of more hardcore games and don't want to waste your time on something not as difficult, know that while "Ra" is a bit more flakey a game it is one that is about 50/50 when it comes to luck and strategy. On the one hand you are depending on rolls of dice to determine your outcome but on the other hand you are also weighing out the probability and worth of rolls and plays.

All in all I find the design and style of the game to be great fun. It has a delightful ancient Egypt theme which has myself and my friend convinced of our abilities to decipher hieroglyphics at the nearest museum's Egypt exhibit. Ready yourself for some fun and play a round of "Ra"!!!!!!!

Yeah the key to this game's enjoyment (for me at least) is how quick it is. I always bring it along for an end of night filler.

Thanks for the review!

Concerning 2 player games, more than one play at a sitting is required simply because I can never seem to do all that I want to do. I plan to crush my opponent in an area he's ignoring, but woops, out of time and I was ignoring an area I planned to get to later.

It's quite addictive, and I just got a thing for dice!

Re: Another game of Ra?
I enjoy Ra very much (and wish it could handle 5 so that we could pull it out more often). It's a dice game and driven by luck, but there is more direct competition (and thus interesting/hard choices) than I find in games like Can't Stop, To Court The King, or Farkle.
