Great. You've not seen a coupon thread in here, then, eh? No EBay BIN threads? These are the kinds of things we're talking about here. Missing rules, wrong rules. There are rules and more than just on the blurb on the discussion area... they just aren't known until you violate them (or are accused of violating them and haven't).

It doesn't matter what the "mob" decides. Those who don't agree with whether a deal should be posted should click that little X in the corner and let the mods, admins, and most importantly, the forum owners decide.

If you disagree with the forum rules as currently posted, send a message to the admins and ask for the rules to be clarified or changed. It is my opinion that most people seem to be able to follow the existing rules and guidelines as they stand.

I don't disagree with the existing rules. I simply don't know what they are.

To go ahead and rehash what has already been said on this very topic, I (and others) would like to post stuff people WANT to see. If people don't want to see a Deniath thread, an EBay auction, DO want to see a region specified in the subject and DO want to see a price, then as a newbie poster who doesn't know that... where do I go to learn it? Trial and error? Look on the forums at other examples? What about threads that have been deleted? How do I know what causes a thread to be deleted. I had a thread deleted today for posting a referral offer. That's not in that discussion forum text.

I don't want to be a jerk and post something that offends everyone. That's all I'm looking for. The "how not to be a jerk" list. That's it. It doesn't exist though... you have to find out through trial and error now and frankly it's a barrier to entry for new users.

I don't understand the controversy here. Plenty of other forums here have pinned threads.

Most of you complaining already know the rules. This post isn't really for you, other than you might get better results from new folk.

I think this thread has outlived it's usefulness.

My goals were:
1. Learn all of the rules.
2. Make a place where people who wanted to know what the rules are can go.

#1 is accomplished, so thanks to all of the people who contributed. I feel comfortable that I know what people want to see and what will get my thread deleted. #2 is left as a suggestion to those in charge (whoever you are).

To me, the rules should be pretty simple. When you factor in shipping, is the deal cheaper than the 'normal' price for the item on other OLGSs without shipping? If so, it's a Hot Deal. If not, it isn't. So if CSI has the game for $30, and the deal is

The problem is this thread isn't about learning the rules its about guessing them. Following all these rules doesn't mean your post will stay and breaking these rules doesn't mean your post will be deleted.

Video game deals should be included even if not board game releated as Videogamegeek.com doesn't have a hot deals section.

I think I understand. What you are saying is this is actually a game. No one knows the rules. You guess! You can post something. It may or may not be deleted, flamed, etc. Only the other people and the mods know the REAL rules. The rules are unknowable. Any attempt to know them is fruitless on purpose to keep the game going! If we put all of the rules in one place like a normal forum... where is the fun in that!

Or maybe it's like Mastermind or Battleship! I get it. I've been looking at this all wrong. So if someone deletes a post, are you supposed to say "awww, you sunk my battleship!

I think I'll stick to lurking and post deals elsewhere. This is ridiculous.

Dude, it's not rocket surgery. Here are the rules, " No coupon codes, no dealers, no eBay auctions, no SPAM." Simple and easy to understand. If you feel something you see is a Hot Deal, post it. If someone else doesn't like it, they can pound sand. If the administration doesn't like it, they will let you know.

I think I recall an admin saying that they didn't want to make a big list of rules, preferring to leave it mainly user decided. Meaning they generally don't move or delete listings unless people start reporting the thread. (that's my entry in the guessing the rules game)

No set of rules will protect you from getting flamed. This is the interweb!

Coupon codes are posted on here every day and accepted. So are ebay auctions. Over and over we've been over this.

And yet no one has bothered to just post this as a question over at the BGG general forums.

I would advise anyone who feels strongly enough about this, to do so. If not, just let the forum go the way it has been for as long as I remember. Post whatever you feel like, and if it gets deleted and you get your hand slapped, learn from the mistake.

And they're against the rules. Don't post them. If someone else posts them use the little red button or ignore them. You can't control what other people do and societal pressure only works when the society agrees.

You said all you were seeking is "clarity". What the rules are is not unclear. They're explicitly stated. Your objection seems to be about how and when they are enforced. That's nothing anyone but the site admins can help you with. Posting an inappropriate thread to complain about what's appropriate is a bit ridiculous.

Geesh people!

what the heck is wrong with having a discussion about what is or isn't appropriate to post???

People discuss issues related to trading all the time in the trade forums,

That's where you can learn the expectations of the community. For example: that neutral feedback is actually considered negative feedback, that you should message someone before sending a trade proposal, etc.

Seriously, you need no further proof of how picky the Hot Deals forum people are than this thread.

It is not ridiculous to clarify people's expectations-- it's called communication so everyone can be on the same page.

Communication is good.

I have to agree with Jatoha here. Some people know the rules, others do not. And while the rules are clearly stated, we know and accept that they will be broken occasionally. We have the power to stop/report it by flagging such posts for the admins.

While I'm not going to take a specific side here as to whether the rules for hot deals should be pinned or not, I will say that I am disappointed by some of the comments here. It is all very well to point out things to our fellow users and send them in the right direction with a pat on the back. It is something else to flame them entirely, as some of the comments here have done.

I am well aware that the internet is a place in which people can air their views in whatever manner they like. However, I'd like to think that BGG is a place where we can act as a community to communicate between each other, help each other out and provide constructive feedback and encouragement. Some of the comments here are akin to those produced by 12 year olds in a Halo forum...

Many have provided such constructive feedback - to you thumbsup

I'm not trying to sound negative or even critical, but in my opinion to discuss the rules to such lengths for a forum whose purpose is simply to allow people to advertise or announce deals they think are worthy of public knowledge (my definition of what Hot Deals is really about) is a bit silly and definitely overkill. There is no reason why we can't discuss these things, but the rules are there.

Are they set in stone? Nope. Do they get broken? Sure. Is it the end of the world? Not even close.

As I've read this entire thread through, every post, from beginning to end, it sounds more and more like someone is simply upset that they had a thread deleted and wanted to know why. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this - I would wonder this if it happened to me as well - and is right for him to question it. But, really? To nitpick on examples of threads countering the rules (e.g., threads with coupon codes) to exemplify the unfairness of his thread being canceled (e.g., thread about deniath account referrals and deals) just feels awfully too far gone into Rules Lawyering territory. Does it deserve this much nitpicking? We all have our opinions (obviously) but mine is that it definitely does not.

Just roll with it. Some threads will get nixed because a mod doesn't like that it feels like the person is asking for referrals. Some threads will never get nixed even though the words "coupon code" is right in the subject. Does it matter? It really shouldn't. And if it bugs you, then just ignore it and move on. Really. That simple.

I hope this doesn't come across as being critical, because I certainly didn't mean it to. andersonimes has every right to complain and point and write about what may or may not be in the rules for the board. However, my counterpoint is simply this: don't let it bother you. You now have a pretty decent grasp of the rules and now know that sometimes they'll get broken.

It's not a big deal and it shouldn't be. Let's move on. And, by the gods, let's not be jerks to each other about it.

Agree with you on two points there, Ender Wiggin.

Ender Wiggin wrote:

Really it's too much of a hassle to let what is posted on the net drag you down. However, this goes both for the OP and those who have responded negatively too.

Last point is a big one. Please, lets not gripe at each other. Peace and harmony and a helping hand to all isn't too much to ask...

Nothing is wrong with having such a discussion, but it's certainly ironic that you're breaking the already existing folder rules by having the discussion here. If you wanted to talk about it without violating any site guidelines, you could do so in the BGG Suggestions Forum (header: "Post and discuss improvement site suggestions here").

Re: What's a hot deal?
I'm pinning this thread to the Hot Deals forum. It does a nice job of summarizing what has, up to now, been largely tribal knowledge. It's a very useful set of guidelines and I can see it being quite helpful to people checking out Hot Deals for the first time.

I'm also locking this thread here so it won't continue to ping anyone's subscriptions to Hot Deals. Any suggestions for changes to the posted guidelines can be made in a new thread in the BGG Suggestions forums.

Thanks to andersonimes for taking the initiative on this effort!
