Hey Jack,

I thought of another question or two for you.

1) Do you have a designer (or designers) that you follow closely (i.e. buy or at least try all their games)?

2) You've stated that you like negotiation in your games. Can you think of any negotiation games that you really didn't like? And why didn't you like them?

3) How's Lucas?

Congrats, Jack -- long overdue, at that! For your dedicated work in the math trade part of this community alone, you are a worthy and deserving GotW.

I ask you no questions, as you have enough on your plate already.

Enjoy~

Thank you Mike. That's very kind of you. I'm still somewhat bemused at being selected, when there are lots of deserving members of the community out there, but am appreciative.

Hey Matt,

1) I always check out Martin Wallace games. They're usually worth a try, and I do seem to enjoy most of them.

2) Junta springs to mind, but it was so long ago that I don't specifically remember why it fell flat with our group. I think our one play of it was about 14-15 years ago.

Catan: Seafarers really fell short too. It increased the setup and teardown time significantly and we just didn't feel like it added any value to Settlers of Catan, which we played a lot at the time. We were really looking forward to this expansion too...

Chinatown and Intrigue also felt a little flat.

3) On the surface, I'd say about the same. I think he has his follow-up appointment on Saturday. Thanks for asking!

Here's a picture of Lucas as a kitten:

Congrats man. Couldn't happen to a more interesting or friendly fellow. Lucas is SO cute, btw.

My question: Did you expect to be named a BGG in your lifetime (I ask because considering the player base and how a BGGer is selected means that many of us will never see this honor in our lifetimes)?

Thank you Anthony. Lucas thanks you also.

Truth be told, I was asked to be GotW once before (last year) but I was away from BGG for a couple of days and by the time I got around to accepting the person had asked someone else - they had no idea how long I'd be gone. I was surprised then because beyond running math trades, managing a Guild and chipping in here and there on fundraising auctions, I don't usually think of myself as contributing that much - and I know that there are many, many even more deserving members of this community who will never see this honour simply because of numbers. So to get asked once was unexpected, but to get asked twice was an even bigger surprise.

To everyone who has asked after Lucas, the trip to vet was OK.

Good news: Lucas lost half a pound on his diet in the past month. The pain in his hip is less.

Bad news: Lucas is still having pain. The vet was pulling on his leg and now all of the joints in his leg are hurting as he's been compensating for the hip.

Next step: He's had a shot which will release medication gradually over the next month, so at least he won't have to suffer through pills ever night...

As my time as GotW draws to a close, I realized that I have yet to reveal which of my options was the lie.

So...

Quote:
I have performed both opera and musical comedy on stage in London

Yes, this is true. To be honest, the latter was much more fun.

Quote:
I had the idea to open a sub sandwich shop in London about 10 years before the first one actually opened, had an offer of financial backing from a very wealthy French hotelier and a girlfriend with years of experience in the restaurant business, but I chose to not do it

This is also true. One of my dad's best friends from his youth earned a fortune. I got the impression that his business practices were a little predatory and I didn't want to "owe" him...

Quote:
I once dated a former model who had her own successful company which made lingerie

She was indeed a former model. She had a successful company which made lingerie. And yes, she really did want to date me a number of years ago (yes, even after seeing me). But this was the lie because her condition for dating me was that I flew to Los Angeles. A little part of me regrets not flying out there for a couple of weeks, just to see what happened, but where would it have gone in the long term? I would have to quit my job and move to L.A. to really make it work, so after thinking long and hard about it I declined.

Quote:
I once had a brief stint as a professional sportswriter, covering the Milwaukee Brewers

By process of elimination, this is also true. I posted a long article on a newsgroup (remember those) about the Brewers and was surprised to be asked, on the basis of that article, to be a Milwaukee Brewers correspondent for a new online Baseball publication back in the days when the Internet was still pretty new. They paid me for over a year to cover the Brewers and the Brewers actually (partially) recognized me as a member of the press... (press materials were made available to me, but no press pass for free entry to games - at that time, online correspondents were still looked down upon a little)

Congrats!

1) What's your favorite game theme?
2) What's your favorite game mechanic?
3) What do you like least about your favorite game?
4) Do you play RPGs, or just boardgames?
5) Will you go over to RPGGeek and VGGeek and ask those winners some questions?

Thank you Josh - but you asked me this last Sunday. We're still waiting for Octavian to pin the new GotW's thread in place of mine. The new GotW can be found here:

Thanks Mario. I was planning on another to start tomorrow but that may not happen now because unfortunately Lucas has taken a turn for the worse today. The bad news is it's costing us a ton, the far, far worse news is that the prognosis is not sounding good right now. We're waiting for the test results right now to find out just how bad it is any good thoughts or prayers for Lucas are greatly appreciated even if we don't know about them.

He's only 6 years old. His breed should live 2-3 times that long with good care. soblue

I think I'll be taking a day or two away from BGG right now, under the circumstances.

It saddens me to here about Lucas. My thoughts go out to you both and I will certainly hold you both in my prayers as well. I don't think Lucas could be around better company though!

Take care!

Re: Geek of the Week #302 - Jack Kaye a.k.a. Anglotiger
Thank you so much to everyone who sent kind messages and kept us in their thoughts or prayers.

Seeing Lucas in an incubator unable to do anything except gasp for air was the hardest day of my life, and I've had a few scary ones. At the Animal Emergency Center here, as you walk into the back area where they keep all of the animals receiving treatment in cages or incubators, there's a sign over the door saying "where there is great love, there are miracles". Fortunately there was one to spare for us. He wasn't expected to live through the first night and now, after spending 30-60 minutes with him every 3 or 4 hours for two days straight (including throughout the night) I get to take him home tonight. Although his life may be shortened by his ordeal, every day will be a be a blessing.
