I'm not a stranger to card games. I was a Magic:The Gathering player back when games took longer than three turns (read Revised). I've played Pokemon the card game, Illuminati and plenty of other TCG's.

I've played Dominion (which I enjoyed the first 20 times or so) back before the expansions made the game just too overwhelming (too many choices, too many broken cards). I played Thunderstone, which was very disappointing.

I went into Nightfall with skepticism. As it was explained, I see how it relates to Magic, Dominion and those other TCG's. I was expecting a game that tried to copy those aspects and would fall on it's face.

I was wrong.

This game is pretty good. It feels quite different each time. There is conflict between players, choices to make, enemies to be had.

Nightfall is was Dominion could have been in my opinion. Dominion I feel is a single player game with others trying to take the cards I want. There is little interaction in Dominion. But Nightfall has so many cards/events that depend on other players.

As well, the kicker idea is awesome. You combo junkies will enjoy yourselves here. Trying to play a Red card which will allow you to play a white/purple card and then so on and so forth. It's card economy and resource management all while your opponent is trying to eat your face off.

It scaled well for beginners. The learning curve was steep for only the first game. We had 4 players and only one had played. We all slowly got a feel of it. One of us first timers even won!

I played this 3 or 4 times in one sitting. This was the base game plus the expansion. I can't tell you which cards were which, but this is a game that will be hitting the table in my group for quite some time.

Well said.

I agree about how it is what Dominion could have been. The level of player interaction in this game is what really makes it for me.

We can't get enough of it at my table.

for me a good part of the appeal is that it is different from Dominion. None of the appeal is that it is better than Dominion because I don't believe it is. Will it be better somewhere down the road? I can't say. But that will be a tough road to travel and one that I don't think the game designers have in mind. I think they will be concentrating on having a good game that they will improve as much and as often as they can.

Nightfall is fundamentally PvP, whereas this was never Domininon's goal.

The only thing the two games really share is that they're deck building games. One isn't necessary any better than the other - they appeal to players looking for different things (either for a particular game session or as part of their preferences).

I too was wrong about Nightfall (I prejudged it as a Resident Evil clone), but I do not agree with the sentiment that Nightfall is what Dominion could have been. Technically, it is true, but the goals of the games are different. I could just as easily say that Nightfall is what Resident Evil could have been, but I do not think that is fair because that game also had a different goal. Each of these games fills a different niche even though they all have the same basic mechanic, and it is always interesting to see how some prefer one over the other and for what reasons. I enjoy Dominion and Nightfall, but I do not care much for Resident Evil. I have yet to try Thunderstone.
