My wife and I play it all the time and once we got to the point of being able to tell who was going to win long before we added up the points, we added this twist to game, and it has brought in a new challenge:

1) You can only play 1 of each production type in your tableau. I tended to end up with 4 Silver productions on mine, coupled with a library and the cards that allow you to produce and trade an extra good.

2) Only one type of each violet building can be built, period. If she builds a well, I cannot. That makes you really pay attention to hand management and allows you to screw up their strategy.

We haven't fine-tuned it enough to consider any other changes in 6-point buildings. In our first pass, she got the one that gives the +1 to each violet building, along with the Triumphant Arch (she had 2 of the statues and I had the 3rd), the Palace and the Library. I had the one that gave +2 VP for each production facility and the Chapel.

I normally don't like the Chapel, but when she got the +1 for each violet building early, I decided to build every turn, try to the end the game quickly, and use the Chapel VPs to tilt the victory since I was building cheap buildings. I had the Smitty and the Quarry, so if she selected builder, I could throw down a 1-point building for free. If I were the builder, it was 2 point, and I usually had at least 2 cards in my hand to make it a 3-pt building.

It almost worked. I had 12 buildings to her 10. I had a 5-point lead on the tally sheet until it got the Palace calculation. She won by 3. Had I got down the sugar plant, it would have been a 2-point game, and I had to pass up the Chapel VP on one turn.

We liked it a lot, and it breathed new life into a game we gave up on a long time ago.

I thought you had to remove the library in 2-player games.

Nope. You just only get to use it once on those turns when you get two roles.

There is a recomendation to remove it so you dont unbalance the game.

That's not an official rule, that's a home variant.

In our variant, we leave the library in. One person gets it and the other does not. It doesn't unbalance the game. The quarry, aqueduct, and the market card offset the library quite nicely, and are equally as powerful since they work no matter who selects the role.
