Homesteaders arrived in the mail today so I opened it up tonight to take a look at what was inside the box. Given all the component issues I'd read here on BGG about the 1st Edition, (issues which kept me from buying the game last year in spite of the good reviews), I was very curious to see what 2nd Edition contained.

Overall the quality of the components is very good to excellent. It has that new ink smell, but it's not overpowering like a few other games I've opened. The first thing I noticed was the cardstock is very thick, smooth and the cuts clean. All the counters/chits are centered (incidently, much better than my copy of Carson City). And there's a lot of them! Ten sheets in all.

The wood bits are good. The "two tone" dairy cows are a nice touch. The only little complaint I have about them is some are really chunky (like steel and copper) but a few are anemic (like gold). But there's no hint of mold and there's even a Silica Gel Desiccant in the bag to ensure no dampness.

The player screens are very sturdy. The board is not as sturdy as some - more along the lines of Agricola's player mats than a full mounted board. But it's no bigger than an Agricola mat so there should be no issues of warping.

When I placed it on my shelf, I was surprised to find the "bookcase" box was shorter than the current standard (Agricola size). No matter, it just means that it gets to sit on the one end of the shelf.

All in all, I'm very happy with the production values of this edition and I look forward to playing it soon.

Homesteaders is an excellent game that really was worthy of improved components. Great to see that everything went according to plan this time.

A small question. Is this version supported as a two player game out of the box or is the official two player rules a download option once again? Really hope it is in the box, it works great as a two player game.

Insert clever phrase here.

Whoa. Where did you buy your copy? I thought the 2nd Edition shipment was still "on the boat" with the copies of Belfort and Eminent Domain.

But he mentions it arrived in the mail. Unless someone got one from Gencon and shipped it to him.

This makes me really sad that I bit the bullet and bought the first edition. I haven't even managed to get it to the table yet - the components are just so...so... so gulp (the wooden bits are fine, but pretty much everything that's cardboard is garbage - and yes, I know the game play should trump the bits, but the aesthetics do have a marked impact on me).

Oh, well.

The two-player rules are now official and part of the rule set.

I would like to note that FunGameCafe bought some copies directly from me at GenCon. I suspect that this is where the copy came from.

Looks like gorgeous, dead solid printing/punching there. You should take some photos of the backs, too, since they've likely changed some.

I brought up buying the new edition with the wife, and was surprised that she was vehemently attached to the old "rough" version.

Yep, it's dead solid printing. I've taken a few pictures to compare with some already posted of 1st edition. First on the left, Second on the right.

Much nicer tokens in 2nd.

The backs of the VPs, coins, rails and debt tokens are the same as the front (and as accurately punched as the fronts). The backs of the new building and auction tiles look like this:

I felt the need to add to this conversation. For those who have not had the glory of playing Homesteaders, you are missing out. I was fortunate that my first edition copy was not riddled with some of the issued that are sadly legendary at this point. And when I heard a second edition was coming, I was not eager to get it; I already had a copy. However, I wound up getting as part of the Belfort/Jab/Homesteaders combo pack. And WOW! I wanted to take this opportunity to say how stunningly impressive the second edition is. The quality of the components not only far exceeds the first edition, but it exceeds the quality of games put out by much larger game companies with much bigger budgets. HUGE KUDOS to Tasty Minstrel. Finally this great game has the component quality to match its awesomeness.

I've played the 1st edition twice (someone else's copy) and it looked pretty good. Of course the game play was so great that I had to buy my own copy, but I just couldn't pull the trigger on the 1st edition. I'm glad I waited, because my 2nd edition copy is fantastic!

I only have two extremely minor quibbles with the 2nd edition components:

1. There is only one market reference tile per player. In the 1st edition there were two tiles per player, allowing each player to see the buy and sell prices simultaneously. This is only an issue for newer players, as the buy and sell prices are simply reversed (with each sale also netting a VP, of course).

2. My wood pieces lack the woodgrain texture that I've seen in a 1st edition copy.

Again, these are very minor issues. The game looks stellar. They've even fixed some of the common rules questions by putting the answer right on the components. For example, the bonus that's on some of the tiles is a one-time bonus, but it didn't say that on the tiles in the 1st edition. It's clearly spelled out on the 2nd edition tiles. Nice touch.
