Edit: War Galley now has its own BGG page. Yay!

---

Hey BGGers.

I spent parts of my summer holiday designing a free board game called
"WAR GALLEY", which can be built and played using only matches.

Here's a picture from the game:

You can download it here:

- Dropbox public folder (full size PDF)
- Google Documents (compressed PDF)

The game is released for free under a Creative Commons License. Feel free to edit and share.

Hope you enjoy the game, comments are very welcome, I will try to incorporate any good ideas and answer any questions in upcoming revisions.

If I may add a suggestion: if the galleys ram with too great a speed, they might get stuck and may be unable to disengage; at least that's what I've read.

Be careful with oar rake maneuvers; you might start a fire...

The getting "stuck idea" is great, as there are already issues being raised about what ships will do if they collide frontally (will they ever be able to move "through" each other etc.)

I have recently played with the rules that ships may only perform moves which brings them away from opponents ship (i.e. turn away from), but I think I like the lodging idea better. Thanks!

This... is... awesome!

I love naval combat, and have been keeping my eye out for a simple miniatures system (or miniature-like system) that allows me to blow ships out of the water.

Please tell me this involves floating them in water and lighting them on fire.

We see our role as essentially defensive in nature.

extremely cool!

top of p. 2 says that the number of order matches you take for each galley depends on number of oars and masts. yet immediately below it reads "You should have 8 matches total per galley," is this consistent?

so much to appreciate here. i wonder if an alternate combat system might not be developed as well. i can see the virtue of keeping it all match-based, but perhaps something less chaotic than dropping matches on the table? what about taking a match-box "drawer" in hand, placing a number of matches in it, cupping your other hand over it, shaking it all up, and then revealing the drawer. would matches point in different directions? some drop out altogether (misires)?

hope you can put the rules directly up on a post, so everyone will be able to quickly appreciate this accomplishment.

Thanks for the comments, I will look into posting the rules in a regular post (is that a regular thing to do when sharing new designs?)

Patrick, it should be consistent with 8 order matches, because all allowed configurations of galleys have this number of (oars-a-side + masts). You will need a varying amount of headless and regular matches to represent firing and movement options for your ship, but the total will be 8 per galley.

Oh my, I just discovered I've named my game similarly to War Galley (designed by Richard H. Berg & Mark Herman, no less!)

It looks like the header text / logo even uses the same font! (Trajan)
Apologies to the two designers, I was not trying to be a copycat, at least the games are quite different.

I will probably change at least one of those things in the next iteration of the rules :-)

Now I need to eat at restaurants that still give away boxed matches...
Very elegant concept even though I haven't played it.

May I make a suggestion about the worry over match heads and catching fire. Just cut the heads of the matches off and then either paint the end or colour with a felt pen. I hope this helps.

If you don't have another name in mind, then I wouldn't worry too much about it -- if your game isn't a derivative, then I don't think a name conflict matters all that much.

Then again, the idea of various names changes are attractive:

Strike Oars
Ramming Speed
Viking Funeral

Anyways, the game looks fantastic -- I look forward to giving it a try!

Of course. I'm honored that you think it's worthy of translation. modest

If I get the game approved to have its own BGG page it would be nice to have different language versions.
