Going back 25ish years for the memory of my first B-17 mission. The plane was named 'Chow-Hound' after a 1:72 scale model that I built as a kid (although the real plane was actually a B-17G from 1944, after the game's timeframe). The target was the airfield at Abbeville in Zone 3. I was assigned to the Middle squadron and middle of the formation.

Heading out over the channel in Zone 2 was quiet. Weather in the target zone was good. One wave of German fighters (one FW190 and one ME110) threatened, but they were driven off by good friendly fighter cover.

Then came the anti-aircraft flak over the target... flak was medium intensity... Chow-Hound received one flak hit... roll to determine number of shell hits... Burst-in-Plane Port Wing!!!

Only the Engineer and Tail Gunner were able to successfully bail-out into Stalag 13. The rest of the crew went down with the 'Hound.

I calculated the odds of a BIP bringing down my plane to be about 1.7%, so for that to happen on my first mission was really surprising. Over my first 200 missions flown, I had a total of 3 planes lost due to flak BIP results.

I am writing up a summary of the cumulative results of those first 200 missions that I will try to post soon. Working my way towards 300 missions now.
