Formal Opening of "Board Games with Scott"
With the new year, I'm announcing the formal start of the "Board Games with Scott" video blog (or vlog). I've got some content up already for you to enjoy, and plan to post information about a different game every week at http://boardgameswithscott.com

My goal with this project is to take a game and talk about it then provide a brief review. I'm a teacher by trade and see this as an educational project - I want to teach you the basics of the game and give you enough information to help you decide if you want to try or buy it.

The focus in the segments will be on the explanation and not on the review. I've found that different people enjoy very different things in games. My hope is that I'll provide you with enough information to let you decide if the game is something you'd be interested in.

I'll also be doing special episodes that are outside the normal explanation/review format. I've already got one special episode that explains the basic major categories of these types of games. I'll also be doing an "All About Scott" episode and, once I'm comfortable with the process, a session on how to Vlog.

I've got 2 reviews of games up so far as well as a special "Board Games 101" episode, all of which can be found at Board Games with Scott.

I'll be posting announcements of the new entries at Boardgamegeek, there's an RSS feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/boardgameswithscott, and if you are a LiveJournal user, you can add the feed from http://www.livejournal.com/users/bgswithscott/ . Finally, if you would prefer an e-mail when there is a new vlog entry, sign up for the http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/bgws/ Yahoo group.

I've also submitted it to Itunes and other aggregators. This is a great resource for those you want to introduce to the hobby, so please pass the URL (http://boardgameswithscott.com) along. I may or may not stay with Blogger as my main tool, but that URL will take you to whatever I'm using.

I enjoyed your Hoopla video. Now, if I ever have to play, I'll have a great rules tweak! I loved the examples. (I didn't get Woodstock...sorry.)

I just watched all three videos and wanted to say WOW! These will be a great way to introduce new games to my gaming group, I'll just email them the link to watch the video. So now I have to go buy Vegas Showdown!! Any plans to cover heavier games or games that may be out of print or are you planning to stick with games that are readily available and accessible to beginners?

I just finished up next week's episode, which is a review of Friedrich, so I certainly will be looking at heavier games. I'll also do some out of print games (like Die Macher) at some point. I'm going to try and alternate between game types to provide variety.

Basically, if it's in my collection, it's a candidate.

Scott,

I know you're jusy getting started and have plans for future episodes but it'd be interesting to see an episode with some of the (near)current mass market games, Battleball, Heroscape, ect.

A cool idea. I've been thinking about doing videos explaining rules of games. I've noticed that a number of people don't like to read rules, but rather prefer to be taught face to face. I've heard audio blogs attempting to explain how a game works, but for anything complicated, I think you need video to show the bits, explain the play, etc.

When you do a vblog, are you going to put a link in the corresponding game entry?

Yes, I've already started this - you'll find direct links to the proper entries listed as 'Video Reviews' under Reviews for Vegas Showdown and Hoopla.

Hey, Scott

Great idea! I think this video idea should have been done before and I think as time goes on it will get better. It is certainly a welcome addition to the hobby, and I'm sure it will be a factor in introducing new gamers to the hobby as well as being a good forum for introducing games that even long time gamers will appreciate.

One thing, though. How do you have enough time to teach and do this kinda thing? Teaching is very time consuming as it is, and this endeavor is certainly time consuming as well. In any case, more power to you.

Wow, great job Scott! Impressive comprehensive overview of the hobby in Board Games 101. I also liked the two reviews so far (as well as the HourCNY spots), am looking forward to future reviews, like Friedrich. Good luck with the vlog.
