As a strategy gamer, I'd say it would be a good strategy
to put the rules online a couple of days before the game's release ( at Essen. )

Say what ... ?

By your command......

In fact, we've been talking about this during the week, and especailly within the last few hours. I'm hoping they will be up here by the weekend - watch this space....

We'll also be starting an official FAQ thread, since with a game like this, there's gonna be questions.

The question is, when they are published, will anyone still read my daily sneak previews

I'm one of those people that definitely needs a read-through of the rules before I'm ready to buy anything.

Me too. That was one of my points I raised when I said they should do it. I'm not saying they are doing it because I told them too - I think they were going to do it anyway, I just confirmed how I need to read rules beforehand and I cant be the only one who thinks like that

I'd very much like to see the rules for this. More and more games are being announced with the rules provided last minute before release. Unfortunately some of the games are even selling out (Poseidon's Kingdom) before the rules are published. shake

You've been doing an awesome job with the previews It's probably the only thing that's been stemming a rebellion of mass proportions. People wanna know about this game badly.

That's great news! I'm looking forward to see the actual rules! But I also hope you'll not stop with your daily sneak previews, they're a wonderful way to get introduced to the game, and surely more enjoyable than reading a rulebook!

From my limited experience, it all depends on the game, the company, the people involved and erm... something else.

Mage Knight is being printed in China. The nice man at the printers in Beijing needed the files this morning in order to get the rulebooks printed so that it could all be put together and shipped in time. Cross fingers that it all happens.

Other games however have rulebooks printed locally, and printing rulebooks can be done in days. Cardboard normally has to go off a month before because of the printing procedure, but a lot of companies can print a couple of thousand nice glossy rulebooks in a short space of time.

So, with game designers still making tweaks right up to the last possible moment, the main priority is getting all the carboard pieces correct, and whatever other components too. About now is the cut off for most of these things, 4 weeks before Essen, so thats where the main focus is. There is no point writing the rules now and missing the deadline for the cardboard being finished.

In the next few weeks, the rulebooks will be proofread and finalised, but it is common for some companies to get in the car with a memory stick, drop it in at the printers on a Saturday morning, go back to the printers on Monday night to collect a large box and then spend all of tuesday putting the rulebooks in the boxes just in time for Essen.

Of course, it depends on the company and the game. 7 Wonders last year was completed well ahead of time, rulebook online and the hype building nicely. Ideally, it would be like this for all games, but everyone is different. And trust me, having it done well ahead of time is a lot less stressful for everyone involved

It is likely to be me doing those too At the moment, there is a definite lack of free time. But thats all going to change now that the Mage Knight rules are done. It is on my list to do before Essen, along with Last Will (another CGE game this year)

Why wouldn't they Paul ?

The rules give us the overall "picture" but they won't detail every card or counter in the game which is exactly what you are doing in your previews.

Pick out certain elements of the game and highlight them, explain further and make everything more "spicy"

While I enjoy reading rulebooks (particularly those for Vlaada's games), the sneak previews are a great way to visualize the game elements. It's one thing to read about the components, it's another to get to see them. Keep it up!

Paul, these previews have been the highlight of my last two weeks' worth of surfing. Not to mention unless the rules actually show each card and what it does, we're still getting "bonus features" every day with your preview.

I will rejoice when I have the rules in front of me, but much like a good game review, commentary ABOUT the cards and the mechanics is insightful and equally valuable.

So, all that said, I've never been more excited about a game, and that's in no small part due to the daily infusion of new information and commentary. Some of the other game threads I'm subscribed to have gotten me stoked, but the fire dies down a bit when there's long stretches of "how big is the box?" posts and no new information that actually matters.

Feeling humbled at the nice comments. Thanks all.

You'll be please to know then the plan......

Rules are off in China being printed (I hope). In the meantime, a few people are discussing the best way to publish the rules. Things like best file size, where to put the files. BGG or Wizkids website. If Wizkids, do we have to wait for the webadmin at Wizkids that might delay things. But it looks like it will happen over the next few days.

Then, there will be an Official FAQ thread started here on BGG. I've had approval to be responsible for that thread and keeping it up to date. I suspect there will be a lot of questions. It will be an open thread, but I will keep the original post updated with the answers to the questions. Hopefully people can then read the original post and if their question isnt answered, they can ask it.

The FAQ will be official. I will ensure that any rules question I am not 100% sure about, I will speak to the designer to get confirmation.

With any luck, every question that people ask will just be a case of me pointing out where in the rules this is, or providing extra clarification. If questions crop up that are not in the rulebook, we will look to correct this in future print runs by adding the answers to those questions into the rulebook.

Until then, more daily previews

To anybody in BGG:

Would you please when asking for rules, put question mark (?) on your title? You are crushing my excitement when I read your thread and I found out the rules is not online yet.

Waiting for the rules with anticipation.
They should be up today, right, or tomorrow at the latest if they take it slow ?

Please bear with us. We are working on it, but it isnt as easy as it might sound as there have been a couple of things that have got in the way. Will be as soon as we can.

You already know half of the rules already

As someone who has read the rules but not seen the cards I agree - At least, I'm following your previews.

Web ready Walkthrough is being sent to Wizkids just now, they should post it even today.

Regarding rules, Vlaada has decided to follow Space Alert's way. Mage Knight Board Game has 2 books - Rulebook (including massive Variants and Scenarios section and Summary at the last page) and Walkthrough, which will take you step by step through the game. For now only the Walkthrough will be uploaded.

Is the full rulebook ever going to be posted?

I have found for my personal buying habits that I rarely buy a game without reading the rulebook first (or playing it myself). Since I'm already skeptical about whether this game is right for me, that would be a major dealbreaker if the rules aren't posted (especially since the WizKids of old ALWAYS posted their game rules).

The reason for this is simple - Rulebook has just condensed summary of all rules. It is not written in a way that would make any sense to you unless you know the game already as it is written in really factual way. Reading the Walkthrough is the way to learn the game, believe me.

Rulebook is 11 pages of this:

2. Forced withdrawal: You must end your turn on a safe space. A safe space is any space that would be accessible under normal conditions, with no other Hero present.
a. If you are not on a safe space, you must backtrack your move until you arrive at a safe space.
b. For each space you move while backtracking, add a Wound to your hand.

I use the rules more than just to learn the game; I look at the nuances to see if it's a game I want to buy. Especially since it's likely the cards aren't going to be published online, that will be what I use to determine if I really want to get the game.

But if WK doesn't want to publish it, that's their choice. It just makes my choice that much easier. Maybe I'll still get it, but it's a lot less likely.

Have you ever read the walkthrough/rulebook to any of Vlaada's games? The walkthrough *is* the rulebook. The "rulebook" is more like a FAQ on every single rule in the game.
