WIP thread for my entry for Iron Game Designer Challenge

Blarney Battle
An area movement/control wargame representing the battle between clans of Leprechauns vying for the right to brew the green beer for the next St. Patrick's Day. For 2 to 4 players. Playtime to be determined.

Ingredients for the Iron Designer challenge: Rainbows, dice rolling, area control, campaign/battle card driven (The last two (area control, campaign/battle card driven) are a bit different than some of the more traditional ways these are done but even discounting them, I still have 2).

Synopsis:
Each player has a home for his leprechaun clan. Players send out their units of leprechauns to battle for strategically/mystically important areas. The campaign cards grant a certain number of activations ("jigs") and possibly a special event. Events may require certain turns of the game. The game is played in 11 turns, 1 for each month leading up to the next March. Some events will not happen in certain months (the event "Christmas Comes Early" can't happen in November of December because Santa is too busy at that time of year to be bothered with inter-leprechaun fighting).

Battles may be one of two types. Shillelagh battles are physical confrontations involving head smacking, stout walking sticks, and kicks to the lucky charms. Blarney battles are fights using the leprechauns magic and trickery. Units may have bonuses to certain types of battles.

Here is a sample unit chit showing a leprechaun unit with a bonus for being the attacker in a shillelagh battle (the shillelagh symbol on the upper line).

Here is a sample unit chit showing a leprechaun unit with a bonus to defense against blarney (the shamrock symbol on the lower line) and a bonus to movement (the boot symbol in the middle).

Each player starts with a pot o' gold (and may gain more through play). A player can connect his home to one of his pots o' gold and move units along the resulting rainbow. Capturing an opponent's pot o' gold not only limits his maneuverability, but grants bonus victory points as well.

Links to the rules, maps, cards, and chits to come.

The chit sheet (in progress). Showing here the 4 clan's units and the spoils of war chits. Spoils of war are kind of like experience/treasure and can be earned for victories as well as awarded through other means.

Two sample cards from the campaign deck.

The first card, Cupid's Arrow, is an event, and will occur when a player uses it to activate units as long as the time criteria is met (in this case, not in February). If the time criteria is not met, then there is no effect (other than getting the number value in activations, or "jigs" in Blarney Battle parlance).

The second card, Kiss My Blarney, is a reaction and is played in response to something else. As with other cards, it can be played to activate units for jigs (but there will be no additional effect).

The event cards are generally lower value if their event is beneficial and higher value if the event is detrimental (for instance, Mother Nature's Wrath reduces each of your unit's movement by one for your turn, but is a value 4). Reaction cards are generally higher value because you have to choose whether to play them for an edge at the appropriate time, or go for more jigs.

Sounds like fun! And don't be afraid to be innovative; this contest is not about stifling creativity, but channeling it! The point should not be to do what has been done before, but to take established concepts and turn them into something fresh and fun. Which, by the looks of things, this game will do.

Pics of the chits and some sample cards are posted in the second post.

Now I just need to get the maps made.

And for those curious, Zombie Leprechauns is a card in the deckzombie

Put up links to the files in the first post. Unfortunately, due to some personal issues, I have bowed out of the contest due to not having been able to sufficiently play test. Still, I plan to finish the design.

One thing I want to do is make an alternate map based on a three leaf clover for 2 or 3 player use (as it is, one player could be at a disadvantage in a 3-player game).

I'm sorry you've had to bow out of the contest, but pleased that you will still be working on this.

I've downloaded all the components except for the map, which just will not display. Google docs just reports, "Sorry, we are unable to generate a view of the document at this time. Please try again later."

Thanks. I'll re-upload the map later today. Sorry about it not working.
