This is an event report for the 10th Annual U-Con Abstract Games Tournament, which was held at the U-Con Gaming Convention in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM on November 13, 2010.

Four paying participants and one additional competitor came out to compete. Several other competitors from previous years had to cancel due to travel, work, family and other scheduling-related difficulties. Although they were missed, the tournament proceeded. As in years past, I drew heavily from the games listed in my GeekList, Two Player Abstracts Suitable for Tournament Play, even though not all of the tournament games are on that list (yet). The results for the individual tournament games were as follows:

Breakthrough (Troyka)
Tom Knapp defeated David Whitcher

Cannon
Dave Lamé defeated Tom Knapp
Dave Green defeated Dave Lamé

Fields of Action
Tom Knapp defeated David Whitcher
Dave Lamé defeated Clark Rodeffer

Havannah (order 10 board)
Dave Green defeated Clark Rodeffer

Hive (no expansions)
Dave Green defeated David Whitcher

Jeson Mor
David Whitcher defeated Dave Lamé

Muskoka (external link)
Dave Green defeated David Whitcher

Prototype (Whitcher area majority game)
David Whitcher defeated Clark Rodeffer

Steppe
Tom Knapp defeated Dave Lamé

*Star Y
Tom Knapp defeated David Whitcher

Strata 5
Dave Green defeated Dave Lamé (twice)

Traverse
Tom Knapp defeated Dave Green
Dave Lamé defeated Dave Green

ZigZag (external link)
Clark Rodeffer defeated Dave Green

The overall winner this year was Tom Knapp of Pittsburgh, PA, USA with Dave Green of Livonia, MI, USA finishing in second place. Win:Loss:Tie records for the participants were as follows, along with the prizes they chose from the table:

Tom Knapp: 5:1:0 (Triarchy and Yahtzee)
Dave Green: 6:3:0 (Tako Judo)
Dave Lamé: 3:5:0 (Taiji -- out of print Blue Panther LLC edition)
David Whitcher: 2:5:0 (The Colony)
Clark Rodeffer: 1:3:0 (no prize -- tournament organizer)

Many thanks to Steve Jones of Blue Panther LLC as well as Tom Knapp personally for generously providing equipment and/or rules for some of the tournament games. Thanks also to the staff and volunteers of the U-Con Gaming Convention for allowing me to host this event. Finally, thanks to Richard Hutnik, Joe Joyce and Avri Klemer of IAGO as well as Dave Lamé of Games in Michigan for their publicity help. The 10th Annual U-Con Abstract Games Tournament was part of the 2011 IAGO World Tour.

There's a 2011 Iago World Tour?

If there is, your link doesn't work, and there isn't a reference to it following the links from the IAGO home page. I figured they dropped the idea.

(And if they haven't, get on the stick, guys.)

Why does the "2010 world tour" start in Nov 2009 and end in Aug 2010? Call me crazy, but I'd expect a 2010 world tour to start in Jan 2010 and end in Dec 2010.

I don't have good answers to these questions.

Dave, I updated the end text from last year's report to point to a page at the URL where the 2011 tour list should be, although I do not have access to add or edit a page there. If there is a 2011 tour, then I presume (perhaps falsely) that since my event has always been a part of it, that would not change this year.

Russ, I too never really understood the timing of the tour start and end dates. It might have to do with the fiscal year of the parent group or something, but that's just a wild guess. You could as easily ask, "Why is the SdJ awarded in the summer?"

The short answer is, it has something to do with piggybacking off of the Mindsports Olympics. I'm sure Rich or joe can explain it clearer than I can.

Not sure the IAGO website is up to date - real life has impacted on the time commitments of all three officers - but this does remind me that I need to kick off my annual SDG Pikemen tourney . . .

Hi, all. Unfortunately, Rich has suspended the IAGO World Tour indefinitely. We had a serious problem with getting commitments and with getting results. It pretty much devolved into a calendar of events, some with no results, and results, some reported after an event of which we knew nothing.

The original concept was to promote abstract strategy games like sports are promoted. Rich spent considerable time and effort trying to line up events in advance, but few would commit to anything resembling a schedule, and of those who did, not all kept the commitment. We did 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and had actual participation fall off enough that we judged it better to suspend the Tour, and go with a calendar of events on the IAGO website.

We haven't given up, and IAGO is still going, but we've had to retrench and move all but entirely onto the web. Some time ago Rich and I split IAGO into the Tour, headed by him, and the "pure" organization, which became my baby. I started to take IAGO in different directions, but as Avri said, real life has intruded heavily into our time and energies, so IAGO as a whole has been too quiet lately. We hope to change that in the near future. In the meantime, we're still pushing abstract strategy board games, even though nobody agrees on what that means. I personally use 3 different and contradictory definitions.

I don't see a Calendar of Events that is accessible from the IAGO home page. Is it actually up?

For anyone interested in competing this November, U-Con has moved to a different venue. Details are available on the U-Con web site, www.ucon-gaming.org. The 2011 tournament is scheduled for Saturday, I believe from 10 AM until 2 PM.

It'll be great to have you there, Dave. There are some new games on the way, so I hope not everything is old hat to you by November!
