Has anybody been to one of the Heroes ASL meetings in the UK? The next one is in March.

I am a relative beginner, but thinking of going. I don't want to participate in the tournament necessarily, just play some ASL and improve my understanding of the rules. I'm not sure whether this (or other events like this) are good for beginners.

I have just lost my FTF ASLer so need to find new players to get my 'fix'.

There will be plenty of people there to play pick up games with. If you play the tournament you'll get five games in. If you play pick up games you'll get seven to ten in.
If its not too far for you to travel then I thoroughly recommend it.

We'll be bringing a car load down from the frozen north so need advice as to what Malt to bring. It was Isle of Jura Superstition last year but I need a decent deal on the 15 yr old Glenfiddich in ASDA last week...

Thanks. I am leaning towards going for the Friday and Saturday at least. Do you have to bring a lot of ASL gear? I am travelling by train so it will be limited.

I was in Scotland last year and tried the Arran malts at the distillery. Rather good and non-chill filtered.

Bring as much as you feel comfortable bringing. I've never had a problem borrowing or lending kit and can guarantee to lend you what you need if I have it...we only bring one full set and one partial one between the three of us.

I once lost a board at heroes and the next year was given a new one by Trev Edwards whom I'd met only briefly that year but he'd heard a board had gone walk about. I know where the board is now but the person with it has not quite made it back again. I know when he does we'll get the board back.

Heroes is fantastic.

Once you've spent a weekend trapped with 30-40 sweaty wargamers in Blackpool, nothing is ever quite the same again.

Don't worry about kit, most people come by car and bring more stuff than they need, although I recommend you bring the rulebook.

There will be plenty of people playing casual games and staying out of the tournament altogether. I wouldn't say yea or nay to going into the tournament - do what you feel most comfortable with. The scenarios are available now so you could read up on them. Try Pete Phillips View from the Trenches website if you are having any trouble.

One last word of advice - If Mark Blackmore offers you a game don't let him go SS.

I have registered for this now, but I will stick to non-tournament games I think (although maybe I'll do the SK tournament if there are enough players).

I have now downloaded the tournament scenarios. Are these the ones most people will want/be prepared to play or can you bring along any you particularly like?

They are only for the tournament although the folk who pick them tend to pick good scenarios that are worth playing anyway.

Bring anything you want to play with you and you are sure to find an opponent. I even managed to find someone to play the AK scenario featuring only hurricanes and halftracks last year. I lost as both sides...
