Hi,

I'm about to click&buy this game off Amazon, but wether I buy it from Amazon.fr or Amazon.co.uk is going to be determined by the opinions I receive here.

I'm torn between the idea that my Arkham Horror games are all in french and I feel it would make more sense if I kept it this way for Elder Sign too.

The thing is, I was disappointed by the Innsmouth Horror french translation, and I'm hereby asking all the french speaking BGG users who bought it in french (that's a lot of conditions to meet!) if they found the french translation of Elder Sign was good, average or just plain bad.

Thanks a lot I hope you guys can help me out with this.

Is your question directed towards the rules specifically or the component text.

There is a lot of text (game related as well as flavour text) on the components so I would really suggest that unless all your players are pretty much fluent in English then the French version would be the better choice.

As for being disappointed in the French translation, please bear in mind that you most likely will be disappointed in the English version! The English rulebook and components have a number of errors (mostly fixed by the official FAQ) but it has a greater number of poorly defined rules and in general it doesn't do a good job of describing how the game should be played.

The French version no doubt will have the same problems but that would be due to the poor source material, not just because it might be a poor translation.

I would suggest you obtain the French version and just print out the English rulebook as well (it is available in PDF format on the FFG site). But this is coming from someone who hasn't seen the French version at all I just would find it difficult to believe that it could be any worse than the existing English version.

It wasn't directed towards the rules. No matter the version I buy, I tend to download a summary of the rules, then check online to see if I got them right etc, avoiding any FFG official rule book because honestly, it's not their strongest point.

It is more directed to the component text indeed, for instance R'lyeh is sometimes spelled wrong in the french version, and sometimes it's spelled right making it confusing for new players. Or Another example would be the Innsmouth board where some of the location's flavour text is written with extra bold (i.e "Inaccessible : Text"). There are other examples like this and all those little things make you believe it's been rushed by Edge.

It's not much, but it's annoying when you pay full price

Thanks for your answer, I appreciate your opinion.

Re: How is the french version of the game?
Well, turns out amazon.fr is selling the english version, simply because there is no french version at the time. It's being translated at the moment.

Since I don't feel like waiting, I ordered it in english Thanks anyway!
