Board Games with Scott 012 - Antike
This week, I'm taking a look at Antike, an Essen 2005 released that is similar to Vinci, but with a chunk more to it. It still plays in the under-2-hours timeframe (usually), and due to the interesting mechanism, downtime is usually minimal. I quite enjoy this German offering, but I understand many folks dislike it just as strongly.

You can see the episode at

Next week, I get a little silly (sillier?) with Pizza Box Football.

Mine hit at about the same point and the video froze and the voice stuttered for a moment. Then, after about ten seconds, It picked up where it left off. It was annoying but not a show-stopper.

I do, however, have a silly question about Antike though. Does the english rules book come with the game? It sounded like from the file that it was something that had to be bought seperately?

Yes it comes with english rules, but not an english "encyclopedia", which is not needed. And an english board on one side, german on the other.

Oops, I am wrong, NO, but they do have a PDF english rules on the website.

My wife has expressed a little interest in Antike (she studied classical politics in school and is a fan of the Pelopanesian Wars) -- does anyone know of a reputable (and reasonable) online source for Antike in the U.S. ?

Also, I noticed that the reviewer pronounced the name of the game closer to "an-teak" whereas I sort of mentally sounded it out as "an-tea-kay" -- is the first correct?

Regarding the rules, I ordered my copy from Eggertspiele, and they included a (printed from a computer) copy of the English rules.

However, while filming this episode, I spilled coffee all over them, so I hunted down another copy of the file from here, and printed a new set of rules for myself.

Regarding the pronounciation, I used to pronounce it "An-tee-kay", but then I realized that Antike is a real German word meaning olden times, so I looked it up in my German dictionary, and attempted to pronounce it using that phonetic spelling.

Hi Scott,

I downloaded the high bandwidth Quicktime, bgws_012hq.mov. At the beginning of the overview section you can clearly hear your heart beat. I am no student of lavaliere microphone cardiology but, it sounded strong and steady to me. It sounds like being on camera doesn't make you nervous at all.

Great job on all the shows.

I got a nice copy of the rules - glossy paper like the german rules - with my copy of Antike.

I have to skip that whole section because the beating heart really bugs me... In a primal way... I get nervous or something. I wish you could redub those sections or something!

Ba-dump...ba-dump...ba-dump... Ick!!!

My copy of Antike came with a full set of glossy printed English instructions. It was not some PDF print out stuffed into the box. It also came with three small cards that are also in English.
