It may not have been front page but it's still kinda cool.

For some extra giggles check out the side bar. Dixit is considered Mid-Advanced level? That must mean my 5yr old niece is a prodigy!

Oh, I don't think so. The tone of the article seems to tilt between viewing him as having eccentric tendencies and as being a member of a growing hobby games community. I don't think many of us would mind being viewed as being a little eccentric if we owned 1500 games; I'd be so happy I wouldn't care (I could perhaps see your point with reference to the insinuation of little interest in the lending library). I found it refreshing that the reporter actually sought to educate a little bit about the kinds of designer games being released now, actually.

Granted, the description of Dixit was a little odd.

It certainly isn't written very favorably, implying at various times that these are odd games, not played by "normal" people, don't sell, acting as if they're basically variations of Monopoly, have funny names, are nerdy/geeky, etc...

Overall it seems patronizing and dismissive. Not necessarily in an intentionally offensive way, more like they're just giving the funny game guy a nice pat on the head. If they wanted to do a real article, why couldn't they find some space to say something about what the games are like and how they differ from the games most people are used to instead of relying on bad puns and snippets of data that have no real point to make?

It feels like this belongs in someone's junior high school paper at best, not in a real paper.

Probably not what you were referencing, but I seriously LOLed at the breakdancing squirrel on a Magic card from the broken links from CoolStuff.

Not what I was expecting for their choice of pictures for Small World -- though Breakdancing Squirrels would be an interesting race/power combo.

I think writing a letter to the reporter is a good idea. It's possible she had no idea what she was getting into when she took this story. It would have been very easy just to "phone this one in"

Maybe some Omaha gamers should invite her to a game night/event.

Huh, it certainly reads like an overall very positive portrayal of the hobby to me. Quotes like:

Quote:
The games are challenging, easy to learn and fun. They offer a chance for friends, including families with children, to get together socially without doing the bar scene. And these games generally don't take forever to finish.

and

Quote:
Beth Klein, one of the game night regulars in the past year, said that 20 to 25 people meet on those evenings and sometimes stay late. She estimated the age range to be between 20 and 50, with most somewhere in the middle.

But as Michaud has discovered, there are board games for any age and interest. Adults and children can play together and everyone enjoys it, he said, just as when he was growing up in Kansas.

and

Quote:
The New York Times reported last fall that 15 million copies of that game had been sold worldwide since its release in 1995.

Talk about slacking on BGG. If he owns 1504 games, why does his profile only show 126 owned? Sheesh, he should really get on updating...

Perhaps, but if that's what they extract from a story about a seemingly approachable, down to earth fellow, though he is such an accomplished man - a professor with an MA and PhD from Stanford...then they're the kind of person, gamer or non-gamer, I wouldn't care to know.

He has game nights once a month. Sounds like a typical BGGer. Keep amassing unplayed games and spend more time "collecting" than playing. :)

I thought the article was playful in tone, and not mean. About as favorable as its going to get.

Yes! A friend refered me to this article in our local paper. I was very excited to see it, and don't think it portrays him THAT negatively. ;]

Way to go, fellow Omaha gamer!

Hello fellow BG fans!

So, lots of topics here for a late-night response. Actually, lots of posts on this article all over - from redit, FB, fark etc. Overall I think it's a positive article that gives our hobby a positive spin.

So, to answer some items:

1) I didn't want to do this article. Through a friend of a friend they asked to do this as others commented on the fun game nights and large collection. I am serious about creating a lending library, but I'm only allowing myself one major project at a time and I'm finalizing some remodeling currently. I feared it would be a fluff piece so I focused on non-fantasy games and the reason for my love of these games - the mental challenge along with the social aspects. As my friends remind me, I have a way of making a gamer of almost everyone I meet just by making it so very normal and picking out a game that suits them.

2) She actually came by my house during the day the photographer came by. The final shot used was forced (and not comfortable), but also not mocking. The cat/single thing came from chatting around the house - never mentioned it in the interview and it is a distraction (though it made for FARK laughter - amazing the assumptions folks make when anonymous and online). The spread in the paper was much larger and positive and also included a picture of 8 of us playing Arkham Horror around the table that I took last summer. As for Dixit - no idea where she got that from.

3) Yes, I definitely have more games than I can play. Conscious choice - frustrated that 80% of these games weren't available locally and often go OOP within a year or two unless they're hits. I do intend to make this a more formal library. I also feel fortunate to be able to mostly afford them for the time being - went from being a lifelong grad student to faculty a few years ago has helped. Plus cost of living in O is great compared to CA.

4) I haven't updated my BGG game list as I find it frustrating to do so. I use Delicious Library, but there was no way to easily update the BGG list last time I looked. I welcome advice on how to do this. Plus I didn't want to draw attention to myself... clearly doing a good job. whistle

I am hoping this will help business with our local stores. I gave her a couple web sites, too, though it's probably best she didn't list any other than bgg.

Thanks for the discussion and the few kudos!

1) Well, only slightly allergic. A pill a day makes it tolerable, but it amazes me that so many others are allergic. Part of my remodel has been to remove carpet and add doors to rooms with carpet to keep her out for others.

2) Michaud - great great great namesake was Swiss and didn't want to be associated with French Catholics (Mi-show)

3) BECAAAAAAAUSE!!!

I'd bet the female non-gamers pulled out these:
- cat
- research professor in rheumatology
- master's and doctorate degrees from Stanford University.
- well-groomed
- single
- squirrel games

EDIT: SNL clip want.
