Yeah, so we have all kinds of various and sundry threads in this subdomain regarding our hobby. Whether it's 'what's the last wargame you completed', or 'rulebooks on your table this month', or 'box art on your bathroom wall last month*', we wargamers like to go on about our hobby and all of the ancillary activities related to it. Well, I figure, why not another list? After all, we wargamers are nothing if not compulsive about our hobby. So, building on that solid foundation of an introduction, I thought I'd start a similar thread, but one not quite covered by the others.

"Wargames you are prepping for play" is about those things you do before you play a game. Unlike many other niches in the boardgaming hobby, in wargaming, one does not simply walk into the gameroom, open the box, and begin to play. There is more than just reading the rules involved in playing a wargame. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume...wait a minute - that's for after the game starts. But what I really mean is all of those things related to playing a given game, such as:
* tearing off the shrink - these things are sometimes televised.
* punching the counters (or carefully extracting them with a knife)
* clipping the counters - don't think I forgot, did you?
* stickering blocks
* 'added' - sleeving cards
* 'added' - writing variants and/or scenarios
* building or painting miniatures or terrain
* plotting strategy to destroy your next opponent
* yes, reading rules, though ably covered by one of the existing threads
* building the whole damn game, for you PnP fanatics...

So, to start off the February 2012 edition of the obsessive list making which tugs on the soul of every wargamer, I will note my current wargame preparation activities:

1. I am in the midst of stickering Commands & Colors: Ancients Expansion Pack #6 – The Spartan Army, which is the last box of C&CA that remains unstickered in my collection.

2. I am sorting through my recently received Set VI Surface Action expansion to Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures: War at Sea.

Stickering and sorting in progress, while a hockey game on TV provides a soothing backdrop!

3. I also just received my copy unpunched copy of Stalingrad Pocket (second edition), so punching and clipping isn't far off.

So, what games are YOU prepping for play???

I am punching and sorting the counters for Hell Over Korea, which is the expansion for B-29 Superfortress. In addition, I will need to get to a copy shop to make copies of the mission log. I am also re-reading the rules and errata to B-29 Superfortress, and reading the new rules for the expansion.

I'm more shocked at the copy of Battleship and Carcassonne hidden around the room like a wargamers Where's Waldo.

Looks like this month for me is going to be older games. I'm suppose to teach Britannia this month to three people who have never played before. I might actually get to break out my copy of PQ-17 this month though if things work out well. Will need to relearn the rules though and that game has a lot of unique features to it.

This week I finally punched my copy of The Hardest Days and I hope to try it out this month. I like RAF2 but I think the setting of this game may be better for me right now.

I also took care of the stickering for Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War . I hope to get this one played soon, probably through vassal since opponents are easier to find.

My last goal for the month is punching Breakout: Normandy the L2 version. I sold off the AH version years ago and regretted it ever since. I'm glad someone decided to reprint this gem.

Judy, does B-29 have the same over-lethality problem that B-17 does?

Do you mean the "oh, no, we're all going to die!" aspect? I never thought that was a problem!

No, B-29 feels a lot different, with mostly the weather conditions, running out of fuel, and the bugginess of the airplane as dangers. Compared to B-17, there is very little fighting (although, when there is, there is the danger of in-air collisions, which can be devastating). But I haven't had a chance to try out the Hell Over Korea expansion, yet, so it may be different.

I think I'm lining up a weekend of counter clipping as soon as the last sticker is stuck on Commands & Colors: Ancients Expansion Pack #6 – The Spartan Army, although I still have Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #1 – The Spanish Army to sticker (my last unstickered block game until Asia Engulfed arrives.

My copy of Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan just arrived. It's cold and snowing today, so stickering is just what the doctor ordered...

Looks like Leo still has his Xmas tree up. Hope you're not still waiting for Santa Grogs to arrive... whistle

No, I don't do the whole Santa Grogs thing - I'm too lazy! That also explains why this tree is still in the gameroom in February! On the other hand, I am getting the jump on next Christmas!

You have to, at least from a distance, look as if you know what you're doing, and I can manage that.

Re: Wargames you are prepping for play - February 2012 Edition
OK, I was able to clip half of countersheet 1 of Stalingrad Pocket (second edition) this evening. All of the markers and five Soviet armies! It was quite soothing to be clipping while watching/listening to episode four of the HBO Game of Thrones mini-series, followed by watching 2/3's of Lord of the Rings The Two Towers.

BTW - Gamers/MMP - love SCS games - hate 1/2 counters with a myriad of color codings and ultra tiny fonts! C'mon guys - wargamers aren't getting any younger! 5/8" counters and big fonts, please, and remember us colorblind players!

Wow - coincidence - I'm doing exactly the same thing. Started last night in fact. I'm finding the counters in Stalingrad Pocket (second edition) to not punch out very cleanly. Getting lots of ragged corners - may have to start clipping them out of desperation.

My first play of the game - I'm going all in - setting up Scenario 2 (Operation Uranus) to solo.

I was thinking about soloing Scenario 1, but now that you're doing Scenario 2, maybe I'll do that one instead, so we can compare notes! And yeah, you have to be patient with punching the counters - it takes some back and forth before they come out, and even then you have to pull some of them off the frame. Since I always clip, it's not a big deal, but I want to take care not to delaminate any of the them.
