Hello fellow geeks (presupposing that is the appropriate term),

I just created an account in preparation to journey further into the rabbit hole. Having been in observance of this website through the past year it felt like the right time to join it's ranks. I do not want to miss out on another great board game, which I admit to having done over the past year, do to my lacking being apart of this site. I am a voracious reader, and self proclaimed bibliophile, so naturally I enjoy euro-style gaming (which I believe is a term used in reference to rule heavy games?). Like I have said I am new; so please go easy on my newbliness . My love for board games started in my early teens when I would play tabletop war games (Warhammer) and then play conventional board games in between. One of my best friends had a bunch of really cool board games that we would play when we weren't playing Warhammer.

The first one that I got introduced to was a fantasy dungeon crawler that used randomized tiles, miniatures, character sheets to record kills, levels, loot, and items. It wasn't D&D even though that is what it played like. I wish I could remember the name of the game unfortunately I do not. I just remember that it was very difficult, and we usually ended up dead, and frustrated (all while having a blast), and getting truly immersed into the all inclusive universe that was the board game. I loved that experience plus the feeling that it brought. I have been chasing that feeling ever since.

We moved on to games like Blood Bowl (naturally, as it is based from the Warhammer universe), Settlers of Catan, and Axis and Allies. What I would call gateway board games; at least in the cases of Axis and Allies along with Catan. I didn't start to get much heavier in board games for myself until I got married and my wife showed an increasing interest in board games. This is when I started to not only invest more time but money into the endeavor.

The next game that I purchased was Battlestar Galactica. This was because my wife and I were huge fan's of the series while it was still being broadcast. The board game was phenomenally fun, well made, and really captured the essence of that show perfectly. I knew then that board games would not just be a hobby but an obsession. I had to find more games like this so I began investigating Fantasy Flight Games. This led me to A Game of Thrones (board game) which I greedily snatched up; finding another world that I could get into. Having read the books it was awesome to see, being such a fan, the acceptance that such nerdy stuff gets from the board game community. Not only did this make me feel happy but like I was not alone.

Within the year I found this website and have been thankful ever since. This place gave me the incite to purchase great games such as Mage Knight and Letters from WhiteChapel. As I have stated before I am now just beginning to scratch the surface and am looking forward to getting further in. I am disheartened as I missed out on my opportunity to get other great games like Eclipse, Space Empires 4x, and many others all because I hadn't decided to take that leap, blue pill, or cross the threshold into the rabbit hole. However you would like to put it I am done being non-active and look forward to being more pro-active. I am going to do my best to begin recording my sessions to report on as well as maybe even attempt to make my own video reviews. It may take me some time to adjust and get comfortable here before that happens but they are attainable goals. Which ever way it goes I am just thankful there are fellow BoardGameGeeks to enlighten each other and progress the genre of gaming we all love so much. Thanks for taking the time to read my introduction and I hope we can get to know each other better through time.

-Hairu

EDIT: I forgot to ask, are there any games in particular that you would consider essential and are overall worth owning?

Welcome to this hobby addiction called Board Gaming. It starts with a few games and progresses to a room designated for games only! It doesn't stop there. It just keeps going - more games, different mechanics, etc etc.

I love it but she is definitely a harsh mistress

I really appreciate the reception, it is so awesome. I actually have flooded my messages trying to get out as many thanks as possible. My closet is starting to get too full so my wife and I are talking about a bookcase in my "geek cave."

I put up bookcases in my geekcave but they fill up rather quickly. I am coming up on my first dreaded collection cull. It's hard because at this point I don't really want to part with any of my games.

Good luck no the shelves!

Eclipse is being reprinted in May. This article from the news module on the front page had that information... New Releases for 2012: Asmodee Times Three

BGG, as you have already found out, is very bad for one's finances...

Welcome!

I'm building a new, bigger geekcave with a walk-in closet for my games. This is your future!

Something tells me you might like Titan or Mare Nostrum. I'm not sure if Mare Nostrum is in print. If it is, the Mare Nostrum: Mythology Expansion is essential.

Take a look at Ascending Empires. It's 4x AND a dexterity game. I like it a lot!

Have you tried any bidding games yet? There's a whole new direction you could go. (See Ra and Medici below.)

You may not be as attracted to mainstream Eurogames as I am, but here's the beginning of the path I took:

My first Eurogames after Settlers of Catan were probably Tikal, Ra, and Medici. Shortly after that was when I noticed that just about every game Alea published was really, really good. Somewhere in there I discovered Tigris & Euphrates - still my favorite game after almost 15 years!

Welcome!

I'm not going to recommend any must-have games. Everybody is so different. Besides, there's a thread running right now asking for those suggestions, and most of the first 20 games I saw recommended pretty much stink like poo, so clearly I know nothing.

Eurogames are not necessarily defined by their rule-heaviness, though. There's a pretty good thread discussing their characteristics here.

I will definitely look into each of the games that you suggested. I haven't tried any bidding games yet, but am more than willing to take a stab at them. Definitely want to expand my board gaming knowledge. I will see if my local game shop can order any of the ones that you suggested. I am sort of lucky because the shop here doesn't have a huge board game community, it is more tailored for tabletop war-gamers. So I just happened to walk in and find Letters from WhiteChapel and Mage Knight sitting on his shelf. Maybe I can get that lucky again now that I know what I am looking for.
