Happy week as GW

Thanks Gelete,

a) Have you ever been to Spain or The Netherlands?
I have not. Outside of the US I have only traveled to Italy, Ireland and the UK.

b) What game in my collection would you like to have in yours?
Caylus Premium Limited Edition. You have a very impressive collection with many of the same games I enjoy.

c) What game in my collection you dont like?
There is only one game I am not a fan of....a tile laying gateway classic that I respect but with not enough decisions for me. whistle

d) If you could save just three of your games... what games would you keep and why?
This is a tough one. Interesting enough I would not keep my top 3 rated games. I would have to keep my favorite games which are the projects I helped contribute with creative development... Trollhalla and Dark Horse. The 3rd game I would have to keep is one I have yet to play but one I am very excited about Strike of the Eagle.

e) Brunetes, blondes or redheads (boys or girls, whatever your taste is)?
That would be my wife.

Congrats Paul! Enjoyed getting the chance to meet several months ago. Wish you the best in your career/job search!

Have you ever attended any cons? If so, which one(s) have you enjoyed the most?

Thanks Garry,

From what I have heard from my brother, I have a tremendous level of respect for you as a gamer and game group friend.

I have never attended a con ? Do you have any suggestions? I am thinking about BGG Con this year but it all depends on $$$ and if I am working. I was thinking about SaltCon this year but the timing just didn't work out.

Interesting enough, I may be attending Dreamation 2012 on Feb 23-26 in Morristown, NJ. I might be helping to run games in the Stronghold Games booth. I'm a big fan of the work Steven and Kevin have done at Stonghold Games.

I would suggest/recommend giving the WBC right here in Lancaster (first week of August or so if I recall correctly) a look. It's relatively close, and you can give it a try for a day for $20 ($30 at the door) if you just want to check it out, or go for longer and get in for $10 + $10/day (if you pre-register anyway). The open gaming is pretty good, and there are a lot of tournaments if there's a specific game you want to play (although you have to check the schedule to see which day(s) those tournaments are on).

There is also another much smaller con that I've been going to the past few years that I attend with my twin brother that I really enjoy...it's solely for playing games and the people have been great out in Indiana.

I would love to go to BGG con sometime, but it's certainly not happening this year

Thanks Daniel,

d10-0 How did you meet BGG ?
My brother introduced me to BGG...although I signed up with an account first.laugh

d10-1 What are the qualities of a good player ?
A good player is someone whose approach to the game is more focused the gameplay experience than the opportunity to win. They are engaged in the game at all times, play competitively when the group is serious, keep the game moving if the flow of play bogs down and adjust their gameplay style when playing with newbies or children.

d10-2 What is your favorite ABSTRACT GAME ?
Chess, but I would love to learn Go. I've been told that many of elements in wargaming (that I like) have their roots in Go.

d10-3 Can you describe yourself as a gammer ?
Aren't we all gamers. One might consider life a series of meta games. Except he who dies with the most stuff doesn't win. To me it's all about the gameplay experiences you have left behind in the minds of others.

d10-4 Do you have any unfulfilled dream ?
I take everyday as it comes but I would like to travel and see more of the world. My dreams are of a bright future for my kids.

d10-5 Why do dogs like the smell of other dogs butts ?
Humans read palms, dogs smell butts. I'm just saying. whistle

d10-6 Why can't donuts be square ?
That would be cake.

d10-7 Why exists locks on the doors in a stores that are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year ? So they can lock up on the 366th day of the year in a leap year.

Thanks Chad,

I do play video games but not as often as boardgames. In the past I used to play mainly platformer/adventure games. I'm a big fan of the Legend of Zelda games. I have played a few first person shooters like Halo but they make me dizzy and ill after about 15 minutes. My go to games are in the Rock Band or Guitar Hero family. I have recently started to play Skylanders with my daughters; their favorite game.

Thanks for asking.

Congratulations on your  Video Game Geek of the Week honor.

Congratulations Paul! You did an awesome job working on the GotW introduction.

Paul is a great guy and has a unique perspective to mechanics and design. In working with Paul I appreciate that he has stood his ground were other people that I have worked with have took a more casual approach. I think the default response when working with someone that is creating something is to back off and let them do their own thing. That is not always a good approach when it comes to game design though.

In my mind, getting as many eyes as possible on a games design towards the end of the beta testing is crucial. If anyone has a chance to play test a prototype for someone, take into consideration that providing the designer with as much critical opionions is in everyones best interest.

Overall, I think Paul brings a much needed critical eye to monitoring the player experience. When Paul helped me with final balancing and tweaking on Dark Horse this was very apparent. I know designers, myself included, have very specific ideas of the overall direction of a project but it is nice to have a set of eyes paying attention to this important aspect. Paul does a great job of playing "Devils Advocate" for the gamers perspective.

Paul, I wish you the best of luck in the future and I will be in your court when you are ready to bring the dream of getting your first game out into the public.

Thanks bryce0lynch,

*) Do you find much crossover between your professional skills and your hobbies?
I do see a cross over. My job as an IT professional is to understand business process, authoritative source data and the end user tools that control the flow of transactional data. My approach to game development or even my approach to a gaming experience is very much the same thing...analysing the environment, digging deep into the inner working and layering of game mechanics. In my game development and playtesting roles I have in the past created decision trees as an aid to analysis the multiple paths to victory and ensure game balance. The diagram below was used while playtesting Trollhalla.

*) Your employment must have been a great sense of stability in your life. How did you deal with the uncertainty and loss, if there was any?
The uncertainty has been an adjustment. I have been very fortunate having a place to call my work home for the past 25 years. It has been a roller coaster ride working within the NYC investment banking industry. I pretty much had a different job every few years as I moved up the corporate ladder. I am extremely creative, need to keep myself busy and accustom to always having a project to focus on. That is the toughest part, finding something to channel my energy. My new full-time job now is identifying the next phase in my career. Wish me luck.

Thanks for asking. These were very good questions.

Congratulations on your

Thanks Don. I am humbled by your kind words. You were kind enough to invite me into your project. It was a great experience and honor working with you. I took great pleasure in taking what I learned from working with Alf and applying it to Dark Horse. I really enjoyed the ride which consisted of weeks of collaborating via email, chat and phone conversations. I am a better developer for having worked with you.

As a member of the gaming group he found a home in - Congrats Paul!

He's a great gamer and very open to new stuff; if only to understand the experience. He's especially good at analyzing the tie between theme and mechanic. I've enjoyed participating in his playtests and feedback discussions.

My favorite moments with Paul have been the aforementioned game of H:RvC (lol, that Neil...) and Successors ("Why Paul Why?!") and of course watching his brain meltdown in his first game of Automobile (Aieee!).

A True Geek.

Thanks Steve. I don't know what I would do without our group. It is what I look forward to the most each week. I am a much better gamer for having met you all. As the rookie wargamer in the group, I have become comfortable with my role of getting beat on when we play multi-player games.
I really appreciate your spirit and enthusiasm for keeping the group motivated and I know you have been doing that for many years, long before I met you all. I am also thankful we have a supportive game shop in the community in Time Warp Comics.

THANKS JAMES

I'm a big fan of your work and really enjoyed the "behind the scene" perspective of your last video. It was great to gain an understanding of how much work goes into delivering excellent video reviews.

Ok, on to your question.

I would like to see a good pick up and delivery game with postal workers delivering mail on the Italian country-side on their Vespa motor scooters. (no disrespect)

Actually, my serious answer would have to be a theme that is highly interactive with a great narriative arc. As I am drawn to ancient Roman themed games, I would love to see a good gladiator games which would be semi-cooperative as player compete in battle with the possibility of teaming up to increase their odds of staying alive or leaving an opponent high and dry at a critical moment. I have more thoughts on this but don't want to expose too much as this is something I would like to pursue more with a potential design of my own. I wonder if a game like this already exists ???

Thanks for the interesting question.
I would be interested to know if anyone else here has thoughts on a highly themed game concept they would like to see turned into a board game.
