Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I am having a problem installing VASL onto my VASSAL. I download the correct zip file from the official VASL module site but when I try to open it in VASSAL, i keep getting invalid error messages.

I am using a MacBook Pro and have referenced the VASSAL user guide and tried everything.

I have easily loaded CC:E and FF with no problems whatsoever so I don't know if the file extension is correct or not. The ASL module downloads as a .zip extension and the VASSAL manual says to load that but it does not work. I have even changed the file extensions to .mod, .vmod and same errors. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Jon

I think you have to unzip the ASL first, not sure though as I have yet to try VASSAL.

Hi,

I did unzip it as well to no effect. In the unzipped file, there is nothing with an extension of .vmod or .mod. Just all the board, map, counter files with everything else. The VASSAL user guide, on the last page, says to try loading the zip file by itself but that does not work either. Frustrating.

You're getting the download from vassalengine.org, correct? You know Steve Jobs is dead - don't feel obligated any longer to use Apple...

My VASLv592.zip file has the vasl.mod within it. You extract that vasl.mod file and open that within vassal.

Do you have the latest java? Sometimes you need to upgrade that.

Just to double-check: You have the latest module listed here, right?
http://www.advancedsquadleader.net/index.php/VASL_mods

Assuming the answer is yes, I note that you're on a Mac, and may well be using Safari. Safari will often open zip files for you.

So, check the file name you have: "VASLv592.zip" is the zipped up version. The module is "VASL.mod".

Assuming all that is correct, I'm not sure what's going on, but we can keep going after details of what is wrong after getting this out of the way.

Hi there,

Yes, I downloaded it from the VASL site you linked. No, I am using Firefox, not Safari.

I download the zip file, then I unzip it and look for the VASL.mod file but it is not there for some reason.

All the other games that I have loaded into VASSAL were no problem at all. Simple. This is the only one that I cannot get to work for some reason. At least I know how to do it if I can get other games to load. Ha ha. I'm stumped.

Here is what I get when I open the zip file. Nothing within this file shows the module. I've looked at every file there.

First: good taste in wallpaper.

Second: That folder *is* the module, it looks like Firefox has managed to do the trick that I thought was Safari-only. Must be a Mac setting.

So, you need to get "VASL.mod" to stay as a file, and not get unzipped out as a folder. (Yes, a module file is really a zip file with a different extension, which is what causes the problem with overeager Macs.)

I'm guessing that Firefox is saving it directly to your desktop like that, so you're going to have to find the preference that causes that behavior and turn it off (at least temporarily). I'm not a Mac person, so I don't recall the instructions I've seen for it, and none of the Mac/Vassal users here seem to be stopping by. Try asking over here at GameSquad, I'm sure someone will remember what to tell you:
http://forums.gamesquad.com/forumdisplay.php?103-VASL

Or you can check the Vassal technical support forum:
http://www.vassalengine.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=3&sid=5110...

Or, there might even be an old thread here about it.

This is a common Mac problem: the Mac software by default will unzip everything – including the VASL.MOD file – so you end up with a useless collection of files & folders.

There are several ways to get around this:

* Somewhere in the Mac software there is a preference setting that can be changed to prevent this from happening. The following thread has a link to an article that explains how to do this (see 5th post):

http://forums.gamesquad.com/showthread.php?102945-Need-help-...

* Unzip the file on a Windows machine and then copy VASL.MOD over to your Mac.

* Have someone send you an unzipped copy of VASL.MOD (although it may be too big to send/receive as an attachment for many e-mail accounts).
