Last night an auction was scheduled to end at 9 PM. Any bids after 9 would be disallowed.
I bid at 7:38. Now the strangeness begins.
At 9 a bid goes up beating mine. Pretty good timing. So be it. I guess it was honored by the seller.
2 hours later an exact item goes up for sale from the same buyer for what is the same item. Marked up $19.
I am not disappointed in the item going to another buyer. I just don't think I will even consider auctions again.
No loss of a Holy Grail game in this scenario but the experience doesn't sit well with me.
I know that some of you will say boo hoo. There is no rule against it. That's Capitalism and the whole routine. You are correct. I just don't want to do it on EBay or here.
It was Die Macher if you wanted to know.

Do you know if that same buyer also bought another game the two were combined by the seller under Die Macher?

I don't believe so. Even if it was an upgrade to a better copy, I would understand.
All I know, is the game was relisted almost verbatim. Marked up and added shipping that was free for the game originally.

The auction was mine. If there are any shenanigans going on, I don't know anything about it. If he's simply trying to flip the game, then I guess that's his right.

I know some people schedule their auctions to end at a random time to stop people from sniping at the end. I'm not sure whether I like that or not. I may try that one day.

I'm sorry your experience wasn't a good one. I always hope that my games will go to people who will play them, but there are sharks in the water out to make money - not that there's anything wrong with that - but it's disappointing for those of us who are just trying to get a game to play.

Larry, if I happen upon another copy of Die Macher at a reasonable price I'll keep you in mind.

That was his fourth bid of the day on the item. As far as the auction goes I don't see him doing anything against the auction rules.

Yes, this is why many people holding auctions don't disclose the end time.

Guys, No harm or foul. It's my experience. I make no claims other than the facts. Like I said in my initial post, It's the free market of flipping. I bid like everyone else. The time of the winning post was 9 PM. I thought of bidding again. It said times after 9 would be invalid. I have seen many auctions run like this. Seems ok. The 1 I bid on goes this way.
I don't feel that I have been wronged. It's not personal. It's just a game.

If 19 bucks mean so much to that dude, then perhaps anger isn't exactly the emotion he deserves.

I guess the other thing to remember is just how good the community here is. We all get spoiled by how great 99% of the users here are & take stuff like this personally when it happens. I have had great luck with auctions & trades on BGG. If you give it another chance I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself.

This is a great place to be. I am very fortunate in my life and very grateful for everything I have. I am not angry. Don't take it that way. I have not been harmed in any way.
I thought all day about the situation and really wanted to express my impression of the experience.
If the buyer needs to turn a profit on it for life's bills. Good Luck.

I was able to buy a copy of Planet Steam this week from Boards and Bits. I think I will get over this tragedy.

Funny, I had that happen once. I got an email from someone who won an item in auction saying that his wife was mad and asking if he could retract his bid.

I almost felt like doing that after I spent more than I probably should on a recent lot of Memoir 44 stuff on eBay. But I bid it, so I followed up. Wife wasn't too happy with the $400 spent! oops.

I just got my $125 winning payment returned by a seller that decided a bid placed for slightly more than mine after bidding had ended AND after receiving the winning email from the seller (which is how I knew what PayPal address to use).

The seller changed his mind and decided to go with the other buyer. I was definitely "WTF!", but whatever, one bad experience out of the MANY I've had as an auction buyer won't put me off. All the other BGGers have been great to deal with.

This is why, in my auctions, I state:

Winning Bidder will have three days to pay (or make payment arrangements via GeekMail) or the item will be offered/sold to the next-highest bidder.

Seems to work well so far.

Yes, I know a proper 18XX tile should have a tile number.

Another possible explanation for flips like this (though probably not this specific case):

Once upon a time I wanted a certain OOP game. However, I didn't want it enough to pay the going rate. So, I was patient... every time it came up on eBay I looked at the shipping price and put in a bid for exactly how much money I was willing to pay in total.

I did this for almost a year.

Then I won two copies in an hour.

I flipped a copy at a probable profit in the next local math trade.

(And a year later there was a nicer reprint. But that's another story...)

I thought about sending a message to the other buyer to ask for an explanation. I figured, I would receive a mind your own business remark.
Does the person buying the reposted item have to wait for the original seller to send the item? What if there is an issue from the first transaction and there is a delay?
