I've tried every way I can think of to use the download capability on the collection screen. No matter what I do I can't get my entire collection of "owned" games to download (to a .csv file). I have roughly 4,200 games in my collection and the downloaded file stops anywhere from 1,100 to approximately 1,400 games into my collection.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

Yup, I have a few games less, but I also can't do it.

I reported the problem ( Collection Download problems ) and got some nice help from the BGG people.

Nevertheless, I also would love to see a true solution on this!

Re: Can't Download Collection from Collection Screen
Steve, Sorry cant help you with this problem ... but assuming that the reason you which to create a downloadable csv file is to be able to manipulate your database of games in excel or something, I have another idea for you. One of the game geek members has created a customizable report generator which will give you a printout of your games categorized by several parameters such as no. of players, game time, etc.
I have 200 games in my collections and it will give me a shortened report of everything with a thumbnail picture of each in a useable form.
Check it out if this was your intent at:

Maybe this will work for doing what you want to get done anyway. Good Luck, Dave (Jasss333)

Yeah, the query is just slow, because it has to correlate a lot of data and generate the file. I suggest following the query format I suggested on the thread Ron linked above and see if that gets you un-blocked.

The thing is, this seems to work for a while, then stops working for a while, then works again. Is there a chance to increase the timeout for the query? I'm guessing you use some form of SQL server as the back end, have you had someone review the query to see if it can be optimized? I have 10+ years of experience as a DBA/SQL Developer and would gladly take a look if it meant I could download my collection on a regular basis. With proper indexes the query shouldn't take long, no matter how many tables it's hitting (we're only talking thousands of rows of data here, not millions).

It seems that even though the number of games in my collection has increased only slightly, this has gotten much less reliable over the past few months, and it doesn't matter what time of day I try, it still fails out. I've tried from multiple OS/Browsers with no luck. It seems to always work again after BGG has been 'down' (where my guess is a server has been rebooted).

Has there been a permanent solution to this? I am still unable to download my collection. I agree that it seems to work once in a while and then won't work for months. Right now my last download of my collection was nearly 3 months ago and I have been trying daily.

I would love to see this become reliable again.

I can't recall where I saw this mentioned, but it helped greatly, add &brief=1 to the download string. Not sure what doesn't get included, but it was enough to get me rolling again. Currently I'm downloading my collection using the XML api and then parsing it from there, has been working even better.

Forget the file downloader.

I now use the XML interface, which works really great. Newer versions of Excel have no problem interpreting the data. Just replace XXXXX with your username!
