A busy schedule this weekend, but managed to relax each evening with a play or two... or three:

Friday
3x - Dominion
My brother-in-law came over for a game so we introduced him to Dominion. We got in two games where my wife and I tied 36-36-30 the first game, and I won the second, 43-41-41. After that my wife and played a third as she is determined to defeat me at least once, we went to bed after I won 39-29.

Saturday
1x - Killer Bunnies (through Twighlight White and the Chocolate Booster Decks)
I had hoped to play a couple games, but Saturday just proved to be too busy. Before bed we obliged the kids in a game of Killer Bunnies. This was the game that introduced us to the hobby and we'ver enjoyed it. But after tonights game I realized that I have to be in the right mood to play this anymore. There are so many other games that I enjoy playing so much more with the limited time I have. I ended up downgrading my ratings on these afterwards. I won, as no one else had any bunnies alive at the end, so I inherited any carrots out there.

Sunday
1x - Summoner Wars Master Set
Another long day with hopes for any gaming slim. Much to my delight my wife offered to play Summoner Wars with me. This was my first complete game. My wife is not keen on this kind of theme and was struggling to stay interested as I tried to explain the game play. Once we got started and it started to sink in, she actually started to get in to it. She played the Shadow Elves and I played the Sand Goblins. I ultimately won. She hates to lose, so she'll be back.

meeple Keep playing...

Twilight Struggle: This was my first game, my opponent's second. I played USSR to a win in the 4th turn.

War of the Ring: First play for my opponent, Frodo made it to Mordor and got corrupted on the first step of the track while I was at 8VPs.

Attika: Played 3 games in a row against a new player who's itching for a rematch tonight.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

We started with Dragon Lairds; I love that game, Tom Wham makes a game out of St Petersburg!!!

Then we played Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game for the first time; Scenario 2. First try - we all died. Second try - we all died. Third try - woot, woot, we won!!!

Afterwards a more serious game was demanded by the guys, so we played 7 Wonders using the Leader expansion.

We ended the evening with a nice game of Tichu.

Warriors & Traders- Played a six player game of this one and boy was it tight. The more I play this one the more I like it, even though I have yet to win a game yet. Every game is a little different. We haven't played the other map yet, maybe next time.

Fire & Axe: A Viking Saga- A four player game of this one. I thought I was doing better then I wound up. I completed by far the most Sagas but in the end it wasn't near enough to overcome not capturing any cities.

Catan: Cities & Knights- Easily won a three player game of this one.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)-Played a five player game of this. I was Stark and managed a win thanks to building an alliance early. A neat game that I have only played twice but enjoyed both times I played.

Outpost- Played a four player game of this for the first time. Not one of my favorites. Although I was able to keep close to the leader the other two players felt out of it for much of the game. There is definately a problem with a run away leader in this game as the rich just get richer and there is really no way to stop or slow down their machine. That coupled with the mathiness of the games and lack of theme make this one I would not run back to play.

A historical wargame is always an exercise in alternate history. On Sunday I defended against the American landings at Omaha Beach in Tide of Iron: Normandy. The Americans failed to get off the beach by the end of Turn 4, giving the Germans a victory. The game ended when the last remaining American stand on the beach was pinned and unable to move on Turn 4.

The weekend kicked off with a day at Con of the North. I was able to take in Circus Imperium (with a constructed arena), Battle of Dunkirk (which I think was a variant of Bismark), and then a great game of Ra. Next year I have to preregister and take in the whole weekend for sure.

We broke out a few new games as the weekend continued at home.

Batt'l Kha'os (good quick game)
Stone Age (one 2-player run Saturday, and a 3-player run Sunday!)

and

Livingstone--which I picked up for $20 this weekend (I think we scored tents wrong both games, but this was a quick and mostly fun little game that we can easily play over dinner without too much trouble. Probably will pull this out when we have visiting kiddoes.)

I'd hoped to get in at least some variant of Alhambra (to use the Magic Buildings) or Carcassonne (though I am debating waiting for the new expansion(s) before we kickstart the latter obsession again this year!) this weekend. This was a big discount acquisition week so we have Feudo, Phonecia, Jump Gate, and Thurn and Taxis waiting for first plays. It feels like I balanced out our game options with the new additions. Now we just need a good snowstorm to lock us inside for a while.

A quick round of Friday on Sunday. Solo deck-builder. Decided to go from playing difficulty 1 immediately to 3. Lost against the second pirate. But enjoyed it again.

Then I played Chaos in the Old World at the FLGS. Was a new game to me, and enjoyed it. Regretting now I didn't buy it when it was a hot deal about a week ago.

Mansions of Madness being the keeper is always enjoyable when everyone dies...

Re: What Did You Play This Weekend? 02.20.12
Last weekend we took a trip to a ski resort with some fellow board gamers. Needless to say that we spent 90% of the time pushing cubes, shuffling cards and moving plastic minis around.

Friday

After checking in we sat down to play 7 Wonders. We later tried the expansion for Runewars and what great fun it was!

Saturday

We woke up early next day to play The Fall of the Empire scenario from Twilight Imperium (Third Edition): Shards of the Throne. It took forever and we finally had 4 winners out of 5 players. goo I'm not inclined to play it again without some serious tweaking (didn't they playtest this thing!?).
Before going to bed I got convinced to try Cosmic Encounter. I had never played it before and the zillion random rule exceptions were making my brain hurt. Well, at least I won...whistle

Sunday
Couldn't sleep because some teenagers were having a party downstairs so I went to check on the crew as they were still playing Eclipse. I took over for a sleepy player and ran his empire through the final round.

In the morning, after a trip to the ski track, we played 7 Wonders again and a 6 player game of Dixit Quest.

Had a great weekend!
