I already own War of 1812, an excellent introductory wargame published by Columbia Games I still play and replay since the seventies.

And I have just purchased 1812: The Invasion of Canada, published by Academy Games, and will soon be bringing it to the table.

What other GOOD games would be recommended on the same topic ?

I would also be interested in a selection of enjoyable and readable books on the subject. The only books I have read in the past on this topic are Pierre Berton's "The Invasion of Canada" and "Flames Across the Border" when they came out in the '80s.

Just noticed that there are also a few DVDs on this war. Any suggestions ?

EDIT: added a question about DVDs.

When it is your turn to send a VASSAL move, the wait is excruciating. When it's my turn, well, I've been busy.

Re: War of 1812: Suggestions of Games and Books ?
Hi Mallet: I think we're all really just waiting for Mr. Madison's War: The Incredible War of 1812 for anything much better that the venerable CG title.

I also have For Honor and Glory: War of 1812 Land and Naval Battles which I wanted to like but really just seemed like a die-rolling exercise, not much simulation value although the scenario set-ups give some flavour. Also played Twilight's Last Gleaming II which again is very light and not much of a simulation but does give some flavour of the battles.

There is an old S&T game War of 1812 which a couple of my friends played and were not too impressed.

Oh and another book I highly recommend is Gil Collins's Guidebook to Historical Sites of the War of 1812. If you live in Eastern Canada you are close to at least some of the sites in the book. It is incredibly detailed.

Jon Latimer's 1812: War with America is a good book--and you can tell its perspective from its subtitle! Might avoid the US-centric approach of most books, for a Canadian audience...

The best monograph on the war I've read is C. Edward Skeen's Citizen Soldiers in the War of 1812, on the US's militia system: How it worked in the various states, how militiamen were trained and how they fought, etc. One for the library, though; it's a little pricey.

If you're interested in miniatures at all, Cousin Jonathan by the Perfect Captain is a nice set of rules and is available for free.

Also, for the record:

Games: I have none -- a hole in my repertoire to be filled later this year by Mr. Madison's War: The Incredible War of 1812.

Books: In honor of President's Day tomorrow (apologies to all the non-US Geeks), I submit that The Naval War of 1812 by Theodore Roosevelt is a great read. Published when he was only 23 years old, it is still considered one of the definitive accounts on the subject.

The Napoleon's Wars series has a set of battles from 1812. You need the base game to play, which might be an impediment: Napoleon's War: Battle Pack II – America's War

I think the upcoming Amateurs to Arms! should be very good too!

I'm not a miniatures gamer, but I still highly recommend Rocket's Red Glare.

History Channel Presents The War Of 1812 is a great DVD documentary, which I own and have watched many times. It includes several shorter, related documentaries on the second DVD, one about President Madison, one about the Battle of New Orleans, one about Old Hickory, Andrew Jackson, and one about the Star Spangled Banner.

The meat of the DVD set is the 2+ hour documentary on the war itself. There may be better out there, but this is a very well done set, if you are looking for good video content.

PBS had a show on this subject late last year. I liked it quite a bit. Recorded it on my dvr. You might look into that. Sadly, I don't have any other details ATM. I will look into it!

A buddy and I recenty played War of 1812 block game. Simple rules, fun to play.

In preparation, I went to my local library and checked out the PBS documentary on the war. Nothing heavy, but it provided a good introduction to the conflict.

There is another game Rockets Red Glare (note the lack of apostrophe). This is a long OOP hex and counter game which treats the land and naval conflict as essentially separate theatres. It was OK for the naval part, not so great for the land aspects.

BTW apparently the original score penned by Francis Scott Key did not have the apostrophe in "Rockets Red Glare" which is why it does not appear in the game title (as I recall from reading the designer's notes).

Omega Games claims to have the intention of re-publishing this Simulations Canada wargame. Checking up on this reminded me of another game by the same company, Seapower & the State, which I still own and as I recall was quite enjoyable.
