Well, I figured I'd post this (saw it on facebook) in case anyone is looking for a job and willing to move to Orlando.

http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_article.php?a=jobs

Maybe they will pay you a higher rate if in games

(I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or in press releases, but I'm not one of the 'covered people' listed as people who should post in press releases.)

In this day and age, why would you have to actually move to Orlando?

I love the ideal need of a 'Typing rate of 50+ words per minute'. We don't care about the quality of your code so long as you type it up really fast...

They are technically in Winter Park, a burb of Orlando, but close enough for government work. Technically as you say no reason one couldn't work from home but my guess is simply that they want to be able to manage you in person... do note that they have a physical store front and are not just an online site.

Can tell you one thing though, the winters down here are great compared to back up North (even though it's been relatively snow less and mild back home, here it's short sleeves and shorts every day, you can even go swimming in un-heated pools.

That said, what scares me about this offering is you are being called a "programmer" which is only a third the skills of a software engineer, and they make absolutely no mention of salary range and/or benefits (the latter which is more important to me these day with the cost of health insurance)

lol, the last place I worked there was a guy who did indeed crank out a lot of code and sadly was more respected but whose code imho was sub par, it worked but was not robust, he would just silently let it fail, for example if a memory couldn't be allocated it would just return never throwing or otherwise indicating failure. We were writing middle-ware that was going into production environments, always scared me who was using it.

having been here a month last summer the forecast is the same every day...

high of 95F and a chance of a passing thunder shower

I was a bit worried myself but Orlando area is inland and the humidity is not as bad as I had feared (I've got family on gulf coast and it gets much more sticky there). Can bicycle down here in Summer as long as you do so either early morning or later evening. Day time in Summer here you are doing like we have to do up North in the Winter, go from house to car to indoors somewhere else.... except at most that's June, July and August down here, while up North by mid-November you could be into snow (or like this past October we had that Halloween blizzard and wide spread week long power outtages) and I've be lucky to get back out on my bicycle by late April.

Ideal though is if you can to be a Snow bird... Winter's down here, Summer's up there!

Well they are located just over the line from Winter Park, in fact the same exit off of I-4. Winter park was for the snow birds of the north east thus the name.

They are technically as I indicated in Winter Park, I think they simply said Orlando since that's what everyone knows the greater area as. Best exit off I-4 to get to CSI is actually imho Lee Road, the Aloma/426 exit is a bit of a congested area. Even better though is to say off the I-4 (there's at least one accident a day in the downtown Orlando area causing lane closures and major backups) and take the toll road 417 (take the Aloma/426 exit and head West).

And yup, you are right, it was indeed North-easterner's that founded Winter Park... they used to take the railroad down and there was a famous hotel (Langford). Also famous for a giant sink hole here back here in the 80's... I've got some pics somewhere

Myself the other neighboring towns are nicer (and more affordable) than Winter Park... Winter Springs, Oviedo, Casselberry, but everything down here is relatively close.

Since they're asking for site/code samples with a resume and don't mention previous years of experience (especially with "College degree not required, but experience is a major plus.") it lends me to think they're looking for a junior level guy who would want to work for a gaming store more than worry about the benefits.

I wish I was 20 again, I'd be all over this one!

I'd settle for being 30 again! (knowing of course everything I know now, don't think I would want to just do a straight rewind )

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

At programming work, I just tell the boss "I can write tons of code that works most of the time but will be unreliable and often break, or I can write a much smaller amount of strong code that actually works in almost all conditions. Which would you rather have me do?"

Is it wise to give your boss a choice like this? Most will go for the 'lots of code' option, as it shows they have maximised your productivity. Actually having something that works is a secondary consideration compared with their next promotion!
