I'd love to try Diplomacy sometime. I just saw it listed on Boards & Bits for only $21! (is that good?) Sadly, a lot of the people with whom I regularly spend time gaming...cast a weary eye towards direct conflict.

If your gaming group is not into conflict and treachery (especially treachery), this game might not be for them. The game is elegantly designed to require players to work together in twos or threes... and to encourage them to find the most opportune moment to stab an ally in the back. It is reputed to have broken up friendships, and even marriages. If you play with the same people, it won't do to develop a reputation as The Guy Who Always Betrays His Allies, because then you won't get any allies. But if you can get the rep of The Guy Who Always Keeps His Word, then your victory will be so much sweeter when you finally, after several games, rip off that mask and reveal your true nature.

The latest version isn't that great. It is the only version of Diplomacy I've seen with cardboard armies & navies. The directly previous version had nice metal pieces, but the classic versions use wooden blocks.

Adjudication of Spring 1901 will occur in just over an hour. I am giving everybody ONE reminder, which will not be repeated: Check your maps and make sure your orders will do what you want them to do (whether that is succeed or fail). Once orders are adjudicated, there's no going back. No "Oh, I meant to say THIS instead of THAT." The interface is pretty straightforward, but it will let you submit an order to move a unit from London to Ukraine, or to move an army into an ocean, or to convoy a unit to a landlocked territory.

I will also make sure that it's not 6 days before the next adjudication. My goal is every two days, with one day for retreats and builds/disbands.

Who cares where it came from or whether it's correct or not? Certainly not me

Also, side note: Don't forget to set your victory condition to "7 Players" so that we don't have to wait even fifteen minutes between adjudications.

Oh, I've also found the GM command that lets me give nuclear weapons to anybody who is opposing Josh. PM me if you want the launch codes.

Is there any way to transfer that to the Through the Ages game where he's currently handing me my ass?

I was just leaning on you heavily until I saw that you didn't take Napoleon. Now I've elected James Cook and plan to treat you with the utmost civility and restraint.

Interestingly, at 13 minutes past the appointed hour, you still haven't found the GM command to proceed with adjudication. Is this really going to be one of THOSE annoying games? If so, my surrender is imminent.

I can't absolutely speak for Dan, but since we just parted company at the local Five Guys Burgers and Fries establishment moments ago, I'm guessing that adjudication is imminent.

Quit bitching. Adjudication is done. You're all now irretrievably on the path to war. I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY.

Quit bitching? About a GM who sends email warnings about deadlines and then skips off to munch peanuts in line at the number one heart attack vendor in the continental U.S.? No way!!

To be fair, the original plan had been to go somewhat healthy with a salad at Jersey Mike's, but the siren song of Five Guys was too much.

Also, it seems I should have been checking my orders rather than eating lunch, since I tried to teleport from Paris to Belgium. Clearly the game is broken, and if I lose it will only be because of this one mistake.

Yeah, your results left me momentarily confused, until I wrote it off as supreme prudence in the face of absolute simplicity.

One of my favorite things about living in both State College, PA and Columbia, SC is that I have easy access to Five Guys in both locales, plus the United gates at Dulles that I use every time I travel between my homes are right next to the terminal's Five Guys.

I prefer Smashburger, but I don't think you have any of those near either of your places.

No, not that I've seen, in any case. Maybe they'll get a concession at Dulles.

By the way, despite all indications to the contrary from history, the game adjudicated all over itself today. Build phase is on.

Turkey, where are you? You'll never become a World-Dominating Superpower if you just sit there.

I have to say, the highlight for me was Jasper's convoy attempt. Nothing beats learning a new PBEM DIP interface every so often. OR WAS IT FEIGNED INCOMPETENCE???

I did try to put in some orders. Something went wrong apparently.

Guys, the sandbox, it is your friend. Just test out all your moves before you submit them.

Alternatively, do not only enter your moves in the sandbox. It requires a bit of coordination. You might want to work out how convoys work, though I understand the Black Sea can get a little rough in the fall, so nobody's blaming you.

What the hell? A day and a half to adjudicate build orders? That's frigging inane. Who's moderating this thing, again? Rip van Winkle?
