I managed to fumble my way through game two. This one had a much better outcome and proves to me that winning really is possible! The terror track moved very little throughout the game and there were two or perhaps three monster surges the entire time - usually when the board was virtually clear. This was compensated for by the fairly high mortality rate of the investigators. Dexter was the only one left from the start of the game - thanks to Yog being awfully unforgiving when it comes to being lost in time and space.
Ashcan Pete was the star of the first half of the game, clearing out monsters with ease, while Gloria and her special ability really stood out later on when she sealed three of the six needed gates. The last of hers was a real nail biter - she went into the other world expecting to only be able to close the gate, but a warlock popped up as she was on the other side, giving her the extra two clue tokens she needed for a seal when she re-emerged and blew him away with the shotgun.
Dexter earned his keep at the very end by plowing through a nightgaunt and a gug before jumping into a portal, using his "find portal" spell, and returning again for the final seal.
Sadly, Yog got his ultimate revenge shortly after by raising the relative humidity in my house overnight, making the individual board pieces warp - causing the whole thing to split when I tried to put it away after cleanup.
The terror track went off to hang with Hawaii. Alaska can come too.
