Hi there,

I'm looking for a very readable book about the Claudian invasion of Britain (43 AD). Any ideas for me?

I'm usually a non-fiction reader, but if there's something you'd recommend in a novel that you enjoyed, I'd like to hear about that as well.

The only book purely about the invasion that I've read is fiction, Simon Scarrow's Under the Eagle. Unfortunately I don't remember it being particularly good......not terrible but not engaging enough for me to continue with the rest of the series. Perhaps they improve as it was his first and he seems to have had half a dozen or so novels in the series published.

Brent.

This is probably the best book on the subject by a retired police officer:

To the extent that "readable" and "short" correlate, it also scores well. No idea at all if it's any good--and it certainly might be, my kidding aside. I can be more enthusiastic about Peter Salway's books on Roman Britain in general, which has space on the Claudian invasion:

That beastie's huge; he has an abridged version as well. That said, it's not going to be super-detailed on the invasion in particular.

I've read most of that series. I agree that it's just so-so. Fine when you're in the mood for a light read and a bit of vicarious adventure, but I wouldn't rate it much above average.

Robert Graves' Claudius the God, a fictional autobiography of Claudius' reign based closely on the historical sources, has a section on the initial campaign, in which Claudius himself was involved.
