And although I do agree with you that we probably shouldn't have religious microbadges, we do. The removal of such badges would just be a painful operation. A lot of folks sport them, and they are important to them.

Removal of such badges at this point will not and cannot happen.

I like the idea for the badge, but this doesn't say free to me, it just says "anti-geekgold". I would work with the inward arrows or the 16 that we usually use to depict microbadges, and try to convey free. Maybe this image in the center of the arrows? Something like that.

I hear you. And I know that "well you let HIM do it" is not exactly a good argument. But, for example, the first id badge text: "Intelligent Design - Time and Chance are not enough" is a deliberate misrepresentation of the science of biology. It is already a very deliberate negative anti science statement. But that was allowed to go through. Yes, I, too, do not want to generate bickering, but those ID badges have already done so. A better solution all round would be to not only ban my suggestions, but ban the inflammatory ID badges that caused me to want to retaliate. After all, we are not allowed to have overtly political badges, and it is the political nature of the ID approach to overthrow naturalism and ram their religion down the throats of children that really gets to me. I have absolutely no problem with the religious concept of creationism - indeed it seems to me that if you believe in an omnipresent and omnipotent God, then you will naturally believe in some form of creationism, even if it is 'just' that God directly causes the variations that natural selection then works on. Put up a "I believe in creationism" badge, and you will not hear a peep from me. But "I believe in a political organisation that plans to force children to be taught my religion, and to introduce spiritalism into all facets of society" then I will squeel. As indeed I have.

Oh dear, RSP, here we come

It's true enough that the mouseover you cited is negative rather than than affirmative.

What religion is that, exactly? I just thought that the complexity of the planet suggested the involvement of some intelligence, but apparently that makes me some kind of modern-day crusader... I guess I should go find a religion to crusade for.

You're a smart guy. You can do it.

"Evolution: Variation, selection and time is more than enough." is a good mouseover and it most definitely belongs in ideas as a category.

I concur heartily.

A badge that simply crosses out an existing image to refute a point of view is lacking in both substance and style.

There are far more innovative ways to positively support your point of view, rather than merely oppose another's. That's what this forum is all about - creativity.

A fellow gamer asked if I could design some microbadges for White Star Rising: Operation Cobra since none exist...

Link their request...http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/8402642#8402642

Anyway, White Star Rising: Operation Cobra is an expansion for the game White Star Rising in the Nations at War series. This expansion focuses on the events surrounding the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead over the course of a month in July-August 1944. White Star Rising: Operation Cobra adds the Canadians, the Free French, and the Free Polish to the Nations at War series in addition to new units for the Americans, British, and the Germans.

As always, feedback is most welcomed...

Cheers,
Andy

Poll: White Star Rising: Operation Cobra Microbadges
Category: Board Games
Sub-Cat: N
Name: Nations at War: White Star Rising: Operation Cobra - American AFV, or British AFV, or Canadian AFV, or French AFV, Russian AFV, or German AFV
Mouseover: White Star Rising: Operation Cobra fan
Which one or ones?

Point taken. I would support having the mouseover on this one changed. Perhaps something akin to, "Intelligent Design - Complexity requiries a Designer," or one of a myriad of other options. Hopefully the way I wrote it can be seen as a statement of belief (without adding the cumbersome, "I believe...) and not a validation. If not, back to the drawing board. Either way, it is a more positive (hence more benign) statement. Other options are welcome.

Thanks for that.

Well, FWIW, I think that as written it is a clear statement of the political side of ID - a quite deliberate strawman misrepresentation of biology. I suspect that most people who say they support ID, really mean that they support the idea of the good old fashioned Paley view that biological complexity is a proof that God did it. I would hope that they do not support (though, unfortunately some obviously do) the wider, malevolent side of ID - getting rid of the separation of church and state, getting their particular brand of religion taught to children by pretending it is science, changing science to no longer just focus on naturalism but to include the supernatural, etc.

Because of those associations, I will always find the term 'Intelligent design' offensive, in a way that Paleyism obviously is not. Whilst I do not, therefore, like the label (or the badge) to include the words 'Intelligent Design', your suggestion of "Intelligent Design - Complexity requiries a Designer," is far, far better than what we have now, since it is at least some sort of assertion of what the movement is supposed to be about, rather than a deliberate misrepresentation of science. If the ID badge had that text instead of what it has now, I would not feel the need to refute it on another badge.

Besides which, I pretty much agree with the statement - I just understand that the 'designer' is variation, selection and time, and that a God is not required in order for it to happen.
