Anyone know if more games using this system are planned? Or would a possible 4th game be based on the upcoming 5th edition D&D. Do you guys think the 3 games are enough or would you like more?

I'm thinking of buying LoD, but I'll be playing a lot of solo and don't want an easy game. I'd start with WoA or CR, but it seems like LoD has fun new rules and scenarios. I'm wondering if a possible 4th game will be the perfect mix of rules/difficulty/fun to get me started. I'd like to get all of the games eventually to use together, but that will have to happen over time.

Thanks for any advice!

Just don't buy the "easy game" propaganda. I really don't care if CR was harder because LoD is already hard enough. I have been taking heroes randomly and powers(except fixed) randomly, even using two healing surges are barely succeeded in couple scenarios and lost couple times with 2-3 players. Advanced game also seems to increase the difficulty level with traps and some other things. Just taking away one healing surge would put the difficulty level closer to very hard. I also haven't even met the troll in 7 games and it has been already hard enough! I assume the game is easier with 4-5 players but the difficulty is just fine with 2-3 players(just right amount of pain and tension). Of course sometimes you might get lucky with rolls and even level up really fast but I think it's overall in pretty good balance in terms of difficulty.

There hasn`t been any indication of new one, save for the sort of compatibility between certain elements of their new skirmish game and these games.
No point waiting, I say, get ´em!

Thanks for the posts so far. That's good to know. Do you miss not having a caster in this game? The wizard in WoA looks pretty fun.

I also have not heard anything concrete on a 4th game. I don't think they would tie it to 5th edition dnd as the rule changes could impact the compatability.
So far each game is tied to a different campaign setting (ravenloft, greyhawk, forgotten realms). I'd expect that to follow if they did another.

If we don't see one before 5th edition, I wouldn't be surprised if these three were all we would see (depending on edition changes).

I also agree: There is no point in waiting. All three are fun, and each one you own makes them better (mix and match).
I do believe there is power creep and the games are easier then the previous ones. But the mechanics as a whole won't change in a 4th installment. If anything it would give you more options rather than increase the challenge.

Jump in and have fun.

Just get whichever theme that you like and check out the gi-normous amount of customs available on BGG. You will likely be able to fill any perceived gaps such has a spellcaster hero and more difficult monsters.

oh yea, playing with the spell casters in these games are cool, though the spells are a bit underwhelming.

ASL ... yes, this is my Desert Island Game. If I have to give up all my 3000+ games and only allowed to keep one, this would be it. This bloody game stood the test of time. Around for more than 25 years - simply the best.

I'd like more, but not in form of a new game, but an expansion set. New characters, new tiles, new monster to add to the existing. I don't want another huge box.

I'm looking forward to lots of custom stuff (new monster cards and scenarios) from users here on BGG to keep us happy for quite some time ....

Also, agree there is not a problem with the difficulty - it seems pretty fine. I've only played the first two Adventures , and solo ( with 1 hero and 2 heros respectively) and only just scraped through, using healing surges both times.. it felt like I had the tension of almost losing and was rewarded for all my effort with a victory - perfect!

(EDIT: and played 3rd adventure with Dwarf and Archer today and lost.)

Already having my own ideas for custom scenarios and introducing new monsters, so I'm sure this game was a good investment for replayability.

Beside the endless amount of free BBG stuff here, I really wish that we will get a forth game in the series.

I do not have any D&D miniatures so I just want new minis in a new package and I want a campaign system from Wizards!

The series could develop in so many ways. The rules so far are just the beginning of something bigger to come...

That's right, Peter did mention about wanting to have a way for heroes to progress beyond level 2. So they might be developing a common campaign expansion for the 3 games before proceeding with a 4th boxed set which incorporates those new rules.

They must be up to their necks with D&D 5th edition though.

But doesn't Peter Lee (and a couple more) just work on boardgames and the new skirmish game? If so, then 5th edition shouldn't effect these board games. Even if they go all crazy and change 5th edition around, they could still keep the rule set for the board games separate.

As far as an expansion for all three games they could do something similar to what Fantasy Flight is doing with Descent 2nd edition and release a box that updates all the heroes and/or gives you extra stuff for longer adventures / campaigns.

The LoD game has been way too easy for our group. We've played it with 3 and 4 players and always seem to kick it's butt. No healing surges used, even in a game where there were 2 trolls out on the board. The characters are too powerful and they have too many "auto-heals". Some can even do 4 attacks a round if they get their hands on the Bracers of Blinding Speed (broken!).

Each game might have moments where it looks like it's gonna be tough, but when we actually work together, it's easy. We won the last scenario with no surges lost, no monsters left on the board.

Too Easy. I prefer Wrath or Ravenloft because of it.

LoD seems to be easy with 1 or 2 players
and becomes harder with more players.
because of the traps and curses and monsters that can activate much more.

I've said that about all the games though, once you recognize the pattern and work together as a team, they're not that difficult to win. LoD is just more forgiving than the other two.

Perhaps a game set in another one of their more (in)famous adventures. I haven't played a lot of written adventures, but I know there are a lot of settings that seem intriguing. Perhaps Temple of the Elemental Evil, or for the more insane, Tomb of Horrors?

I haven't played the Drizzt version, so I don't know if it takes place in Undermountain, but that would be cool too.

While I'm moderately fond of this series of board games, I think that there are some issues with core aspects of the gameplay that could use some revision.

So, I'd rather see WOTC take what they've learned from these games and release a new game with better mechanics.

Peter Lee is one of the Dungeon Command designers, so I'm not surprised that a new D&D boardgame hasn't been officially planned. DC also has monster cards for the D&D boardgames, so there's *some* support for the D&D boardgame line. Too bad we don't know the sales figures for the three D&D boardgames. Has the market treated the last two games as expansions (ie. lower sales) or standalones (LoD should sell better than CR because of its game improvements)? Also, sales of DC vs the D&D boardgames will tell WotC if there's more demand for unpainted mini's in larger quantities, or painted ones in smaller ones.

Anyway, I'm glad there's enough in the D&D boardgames as a toolkit to support your own adventures, even in the D&D RPG. For tiles, we have dungeons and caverns. For monsters, we have undead, drow, humanoids, and a dragon or two. What else are we missing?
