War of the Worlds Battle Report
February 25th, 2012
Omaha, Nebraska

Last night at about 4:30am I was browsing the Heroscapers Event forums and found out that there was a Heroscape tournament right here in Omaha at 10:00am. Wow that is plenty of time to throw an army together and test them out, right? Here were the rules:

560 Points and at least 300 of those points must come from Unique and Uncommon Heroes. Heroes ONLY count for points killed, not squads. The player wins when all of his opponents heroes are dead.

My 560 point army (Nilfheim, Charos, Greenscales x2, Rats)

1st game against Matthias Maccabeus (Werewolf Lords x4)

I noticed right away when I walked into the tournament that a lot of the maps were small and this one was no exception. It was called Twilight Hollow and I thought if I could get Nilfheim and Charos on height early and use the Greenscales and Rats to close off the choke points to keep the Werewolf Lords away from Nilfheim, I would have a good chance. Matthias won initiative and moved out his first Werewolf Lord toward the double height space on the outer edge of the map. He came up one space short and I had declared that Nilfheim would be the Lizard King for the Greenscales. My first order marker was on the Greenscales, so I flew Nilfheim out to the double height space, giving me height on the first Werewolf. I used Nilf's regular attack throwing 5 skulls on my first roll and Matthias only managed one shield. This could be fun. I moved up the GS and got another wound on the lead Werewolf. Matthias attacked with the wounded Werewolf and whiffed. My 2nd OM was also on the GS and Nilf finsihed off the first Werewolf. Only 3 more to goshake

Matthias was able to get a Werewolf Lord close to Charos on the other side of the map and put a wound on him. A few GS and Nilf moved over to help out the big green dragon. Nilf and the GS got that Werewold tied up, while Matthias got a few Howling Rolls and was able to get a few turns with Charos who wiped out a few of my Rats and a few Greenscales. Nilf made quick work of that Werewolf Lord. With only 2 Werewolf Lords left, it was easy to go after them. Matthias did manage to get a few wounds on Nilfheim but whiffed on the Howling rolls for him. I killed the last 2 Werewolf Lords for a 560 - 0 victory.

Win 1 - 0

2nd game against ThorfinSS (Taelord, Atlaga, Johnny Shotgun, Minions x2)

This game was played on the map Rainy Ruins which had both start zones hidden behind ruins. I won initiative and moved out Nilf, followed by the Greenscales. No one was in range, plus most of them were hidden behind the high Ruin wall. Thorfin moved forward with Minions. On turn 2, I moved Nilf enough to get a shot a Taelord and a Minion. I think I whiffed on both of them. Taelord moved forward to get the Minions in his aura and give them another attack die. I got in position to shoot at Taelord, Atlaga, and a Minion with my Ice Shard special attack. I got a wound on Taelord, and 1 wound on Atlaga, but whiffed on the Minion. This was not going to be as easy as my first game. The Minions swarmed Nilf and 2 of them threw 3 skulls for a whopping 6 hits. Nilf still had height so I got 5 Defense and threw 4 shields against the first attack and 4 more shields on the 2nd Minion attack. On his next turn he tried Bolt of Witherwood on Nilf and missed. I flew Charos over the wall, landing on the road, putting a few wounds on Atlaga. Nilf went down with the next Minion attack and Charos was quickly surrounded by Minions and Atlaga. Charos was able to kill Atlaga with his dying breath and was then slain by 2 more rolls of 3 skulls from the Minions for 6 hits each. Where did those 9 lives go so fast:x? Just like that, both of my heroes are dead, game over. Points are 395 - 100. Good thing I killed Atlaga or I would have been shut out.

Loss 1 - 1

Game 3 against Montagohalcyon (Kaemon Awa, Isamu, Marcus Decimus Gallus, Mogrim, Roman Legionaires x2)

We fought this battle on the map Ice Crown. I think I lost initiative on the first 3 rounds of this game but he missed in trying to drop the Airborne Elite on the first 3 rounds also. I kept Nilfheim as the Lizard King and moved Nilf and GS down one side of the map with height. Nilf got another one of those 5 skull rolls and put 4 quick wounds on MDG. I moved Charos and another squad of Greenscales down the other side of the map pinning his army back in his own start zone. He moved out Kaemon and got a few Quick Release wounds on Charos. Nilf and the Greenies surrounded Kaemon and finished off MDG in the same turn. Nilf and the GS also wiped out all of the Romans and things were looking pretty good. Kaemon got a few wounds on Nilf and paid the ultimate price by getting killed on the next turn with Nilf's regular attack from height. Looks like all I have to do is finish off that little dwarf Mogrim and I SHOULD have a win

Airborne Elite to the rescue as they drop at the start of the next round. I make the fatal mistake of ignoring them and spend my next few turns hammering on Mogrim while the AE plink away at both Charos and Nilf. Isamu then uses his Unhonorable attack to roll 6 attack dice against Nilf killing him. On my next turn Charos finished off Mogrim and I think I won the game telling Montagohalcyon, "good game". He then points out that he still has Isamu left who is also a uncommon hero. On his next turn the AE finishes off Charos and I lose 394 - 340. Victory snatched away by a 10 point Isamu sucks. Very well played by Montagohalcyon.

Loss 1 - 2

Game 4 against Daniel (Sir Hawthorne, Sir Dupuis, Tandros Krell, Deadeye Dan, Tagawa Samurai)

This was a medium sized map called Big Tree and it was wide open. All I can say about this game is that I had some crazy attack rolls with Nilfheim. I got Nilf back in his start zone area with height and I just wiped out one hero after another. When I used regular attack I think I rolled 5 skulls 3 times in a row and when I used the Ice Shard attack I rolled 4 skulls twice and 3 skulls once. Deadeye Dan was the first to go after he tried his sniper shot on Nilf and missed, which made the white dragon very mad. I dont even think I moved Charos or the Rats the entire game and got my 2nd shut out of the day with a 420 - 0 win. Wow my army appears to be feast or famine todayshake

Game 5 against Shockma Ranyk (MDG, Romans x4, Valguard, Ne-Gok-So, Mo-Burg-Sa, Isamu)

Does he really have 4 different Warlords that he can play with those Romans? This was my 2nd game of the day on the Rainy Ruins map and the first one didnt tun out very good. I tried something a little different this game and got some of my Greenscales and Rats out on the road in the middle of the map while moving Nilf along the outside gaining height. I actually killed about 2 full squads of Romans pretty early as they were trying to pin down both Charos and Nilf. Charos had some pretty good counter strikes with his razor sharp tail. Nilf got pinned down on the outside by Valguard and Ne-Gok-So and a few stray Romans while Charos was pinned down in the middle ofthe road by MDG and another squad of Romans. Charos was able to kill MDG and Nilf killed Valguard but each of the big dragons only had 1 wound left and could not chance a disengagement strike, so they were stuck and chopped to pieces by the remaining Romans. Nice win Shockma, 395 - 220.

Loss 2 - 3

This was a fun little format and a blast to play in. Thanks to WolfWing and ThorfinSS for putting on and running a fun tournament. I finished 5th out of 9 people. In hindsight I probably should have used the Deathreavers way more than I did, using them to tie up some fo their figures.
