This is for games in the same series. (Dominion-Dominion Intrigue, War of the Ring-WotR Collector's Edition, all the Ticket to Rides)

This is not for mechanically similar games. (Steam-Age of Steam, San Juan-RftG, C&C-Memoir 44)

In the rankings use the rank of whichever game would be ranked highest. Combine the pages for these games and show what each individual game would be ranked.

Bad expansions/versions of the game wont bring it down in rankings, but information about which of these are good is preserved.

Just what is it that you want to do? We wanna be free. We wanna be free to do what we wanna do. And we wanna play games. And we wanna have a good time. That's what we're gonna do. We're gonna have a good time. We're gonna have a party!

I like that Dominion and Dominion intrigue have different entries and pages but it seems silly that they have 2 different spots on the top 100...

If spinoffs and rereleases with alterations were never put into separate entries, this problem would be instantly solved. In any case I'm not sure that making exceptions to the exceptions is the right way to go. Someone will think of a fourth layer where a game is distinct enough to be a separate entry but not distinct enough to do X but distinct enough to do X-subcategory-Y and so on.

How is WotR collector's edition not a version of the base game? I thought this was exactly the sort of thing the version field was made to solve?

It comes with part of the first edition's expansion.

So which of these would ge a seperate entry?

The Original Carcassonne
Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers
Carcassonne: The Castle
Carcassonne: The City
Carcassonne: The Discovery
New World: A Carcassonne Game
Carcassonne: 10 Year Special Edition
Carcassonne: The Dice Game
Big Box 3?

All of these are stand alone games.
Some are similar to others some contain parts of others.
If you combine all the ticket to rides why not these? What objective criteria would you use?

I think if a game is part of the same series as the original and it has the same mechanics, it doesn't need its own page.

Why does it matter?
If you had 10 versions of Dominion that were all playable stand alone games, what is the harm of having all of them in the top 100? Does the fact that the 100th ranked game would then be ranked 91 make a difference?

There must have been a moment at the beginning, where we could have said no. Somehow we missed it. Well, we'll know better next time.

Well yeah, 10 games like that, that happen to be popular, and your Top 100 is actually a Top 10.

Yes if that were the situation but you would get controversial results like Squad leader/Advanced Squad leader Same game or different?
What about my earlier question on Carcassonne, which of these would be grouped together?

So I took the top 200 games and sorted them alphabetically and made some obvious groupings including the following:

Combat Commander Family
Combat Commander: Europe (2006)
Combat Commander: Pacific (2008)

Command and Colors
Commands & Colors: Ancients (2006)
Commands & Colors: Napoleonics (2010)

Ticket to Ride Family
Ticket to Ride (First Edition) (2004)
Ticket to Ride: Europe (2005)
Ticket to Ride: Märklin Edition (2006)
Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries (2007)

GIPF Project
DVONN (2001)
TZAAR (2007)
YINSH (2003)
ZÈRTZ (2000)

Squad Leader/ASL
Advanced Squad Leader (1985)
Advanced Squad Leader: Starter Kit #1 (2004)
Squad Leader (1977)

Blood Bowl 3rd/Living Rulebook/Team Manager The card Game
Blood Bowl (Third Edition) (1994)
Blood Bowl: Living RuleBook (2004)
Blood Bowl: Team Manager - The Card Game (2011)

Space Hulk/3rd edition
Space Hulk (1989)
Space Hulk (third edition) (2009)

Dixt/Family
Dixit (2008)
Dixit Odyssey (2011)

Summoner Wars Family
Summoner Wars (2009)
Summoner Wars: Master Set (2011)

Dominion/Dominion Intrigue
Dominion (2008)
Dominion: Intrigue (2009)

Small World/Underground
Small World (English first edition) (2009)
Small World Underground (2011)

Dungeon Lords/Dungeon Petz
Dungeon Lords (2009)
Dungeon Petz (2011)

Conflict of Heroes Family
Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! Russia 1941-1942 (2008)
Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel! Kursk 1943 (2009)

War of the Ring/WOTR Collectors Edition
War of the Ring (2004)
War of the Ring Collector's Edition (2010)

Thunderstone Family
Thunderstone (2009)
Thunderstone: Dragonspire (2011)

Carcassonne/Carcassone The City
Carcassonne (2000)
Carcassonne: The City (2004)

Puerto Rico/PR Anniversary Edition
Puerto Rico (2002)
Puerto Rico: Limited Anniversary Edition (2011)

Heroscape Family
Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie (2004)
Heroscape Master Set: Swarm of the Marro (2007)

LOTR:Confrontation/Deluxe Edition
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (2002)
Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (Deluxe Edition) (2006)

So that would be 44 games would be combined into 19 groups?
Does it matter that under this system (200+44-19=225) Jambo would now be ranked 200? Why does that matter? Would your rating for a game change? Would you play it less often? Would Jambo suddenly be a better game?

Yes the rankings are fun and all but what is the problem?

(Sure we wouldn't want the top 100 being the top ten, but we are nowhere near that)

I actually wouldn't group these. They don't have the same mechanics.

The rankings don't mean anything. It's just a matter of organization.

So for the even smaller number of games that have been determined to be seperate listings and not versions you are proposing a change to how the database works. Not dodue to how they effect the rankings? Nor to the fact that they clutter up the data base, But for "organization"

You do know about families? For example I can choose to look at the Space Hulk Family and see the entire list of space hulk games with their individual ranks?

Is this what you are trying to achieve?

Otherwise I am confused.
