What game do you really want an expansion for?
Or better yet, what would be an instant buy expansion for you?

Can be both for a game that already has one (or several) or one that doesn't have any.

Though I know it wont happen, Space Hulk just screams for more content.

none.
or the least it's possible.

if the game needs expansion, it was a mistake to buy it in the first place. Me, I want everything included in the base set and no set beyond the base set.

I tolerate free downloadable expansions and scenarios.

What?!

Not all expansions are to fix the base game.
Some times it's just for more content, or maybe new options or additional mechanics.
Doesn't mean the base game is broken.

It's broken as an investment.
For me of course. You go and help them milk that cash cow as much as you please. Me, I don't drink milk. whistle

Anything beyond 25% cost of the base game is a rip-off in my book, so there's still some stuff I'm willing to buy, but I don't wish for any expansion ever.
I played one CCG too many and I've only played one.

Gracious. More fool me, but some expansions are well and truly worth while. They add to player numbers, make a game better*, or provide more options for repeat play. Not all expansions are simply to fix games that are broken... nor are expansions simply a way to gain more revenue. Many are improvements.

My top 3:
All of the Combat Commander battlepacks, especially Battle Pack #1.

The Pillars of the Earth: Expansion Set. Extends the game to 6 players, and improves the turn order mechanism. I insist on the expansion, even when playing with 4.

The expansion maps for Power Grid. Benelux is my favourite, but they are all fun.

* Better. Sometimes this means a good game becomes excellent.

I guess i'm a sucker but there's plenty of games I'd instantly buy an expansion for.

Battlestar Galactaca- Even with all of the great fan-made stuff out there and all of the bonus characters we've made for my game table, I would instantly snatch up ANY official content for this game. I've easily gotten my moneys worth from this game and am ready to spend more.

Ghost Stories- I didn't believe the base game could be improved, but White Moon really made this an amazing game. I enjoyed Black Secret, but I think it ruined the feel of the game a little. I'd love to see a return to form with some more classic Ghost Stories content,

Stone Age- I think the currently announced expansion has a silly theme, but I'm ready for this game to have a little more meat on it. More players? More boards and cards? Bring it on.

I've never considered expansions a bad idea. Samo says they turn the base game into a broken investment but anyone involved in a creative medium should know that if you love your work and are dedicated to it, you're bound to come up with new ideas eventually. People are never all going to agree on the exact time a game has reached perfection. Dungeons & Dragons is going on to it's 5th Edition and there's hundreds of players out there who hold tight to 2nd edition.

An expansion isn't for you? That's fine. I personally love the idea of widening the appeal of a game to larger audiences. The great part is, the existence of an expansion has zero effect on the base game you have sitting on your shelf, should you choose not to purchase it.

Battlestar Galactica. It already has two expansions, and both of them have good ideas, but offer a broken implementation of them. I am still hoping that FFG will publish an expansion that fixes the problems and makes the previous expansions actually good. Despite my experiences...

Being a die-hard defender of Battlestar, I must say the Pegasus expansion definitely had problems. The New Caprica extension NEVER gets used at my table. However, the new characters and Pegasus board were a welcome addition. We often wonder how the humans won at all without Pegasus.

Exodus seemed like a waste the first week we played with it. The trial mechanics are pretty cool until you realize just how broken they are. The cylon fleet however is an amazing addition if your group is looking for a less luck-based game.

I guess overall each expansion was 50% awesome and 50% frustrating. My ideal expansion at this point would be a Cosmic Encounter type mini expansion. Just a big stack of new characters.

I don't think Dominion would have sold well at $450, even if it came with a hernia prevention belt.

Unless it was a preplanned expansion.

Cuba: El Presidente comes to mind. Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm - those few cards including basic planets and 6 cost developments (and rest of expansion you could throw away). Munchkin Quest was quite obvious. I also have doubts about Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Incursion (only 5 players in the base set, hmmmm).

That's a good point, and I'm in the theatre business so it's very much true, BUT you don't make people pay extra for whatever new ideas you came up with. You're correct if you look from the artist's perspective, but you should also look from the publisher's perspective. And that's a whole different ballgame. I love Roll Through the Ages: The Late Bronze Age and call it "the designer's edition" as it seems this was the way the game was meant to be played (trading variant is obligatory in expansion). Also high respect for Claustrophobia scenarios. It's just that I would like changes to game be a part of publisher's support not part of publisher's moneymaking model.

Thunderstone took an interesting path with the new standalone expansion which is also a 1.5 edition of the base game. This I like - develop your product with expansionitis audience and then publish one base game for the rest of us... whistle

What? This post is over five minutes old and yet noone has mentioned:

- Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization???

Whenever a new expansion comes out for anything I find myself annoyed that it is not for this game. I would happily pay just to see the "BGO Extended 2.0 expansion" in print and "officially" approved by the designer.

TTA is constantly hovering in the "hotness" and is ranked as one of the best on BGG and yet the designer insist on designing more new games instead of making easy money by throwing together an expansion. And the material is mostly already made and playtested for him on BGO! It is all very vexing.

or MtG at... was it 2000$ ?
I needed some mental health plan support included with that one. robot

Lucky me, I avoid Dominion on base of its gameplay alone.

For me it's quite simple: expansions are part of the business model, with some publishers being more prone to it than others (the US ones commonly being in the former group). I can decide to partake in that scheme or not, usually by supporting the other kind of publishers.

My two rules or considering buying an expansion:
1. For this money would I rather buy another game or this expansion?
2. Considering the sum cost of base+expansion is the whole package worth it's money compared to competition? (Pandemic + On the Brink failed this test being more costly than vanilla Arkham Horror. Reason for comparison - Pandemic needs the expansion to be as replayable as AH's base set).

I really dislike expansions for most games, as very rarely do they improve the base game - usually just adding extra bells and whistles that the game doesn't need. However, having said that, I do love expansions such as new maps for games like Power Grid, and any new map for that is an insta-buy for me.

Considering how related this comment is to general discussion, I think it's one of those expansions that was planned to be included in the base set (the opening post)

[sorry, couldn't resist]

My next "instant buy expansion" is Eclipse: Rise of the Ancients.

There are several others that I would probably pick up, but that is the only must buy.

Honestly I'll take a look at nearly any expansion that comes out for most of my collection. I love to be able to enhance and pimp out my games, but then I've also been heavily into CMGs and RPGs so I'm used to steady streams of further expansions for a game.

Heck, I still haven't had a chance to try out my new copy of War of The Ring 2nd edition, and I'm still very interested in the upcoming expansions for it because I know they'll add even more to what I'm already sure will be an awesome game.

I've had Space Hulk 1st edition and both her expansions as well as the campaign book for over twenty years. I have more content for it than I'll probably ever have a chance to use. I still bought the 3rd ed. release though just so I'd have the new tiles and minis.

It's a pretty closed game indeed - curious as to what possibilities there could be for an expansion. More ways to get rid of those dreaded black cubes ? Additional roles ? Selling production plants to other players ?

My instant buy expansion is the one for Lancaster we had the pleasure to playtest last Essen. It ads a couple more wrinkles to the game and makes a low-power army in the late stages of the game a viable option. I can especially see it working well in a 5-player game.

Since I know Invasion from outer space is supposed to have better mechanics, smarter martians and more to choose from than last night on earth to buy last night on earth I would had wanted an expansion which make the mechanics just as good there / as advanced zombies / whatever.

I don't know whatever one exist or if a future one will do this. Feel free to tell.

I don't like the theme of invasion from outer space (and that one instead have no expansions though you could easily argue it don't need any. But if you want lots of them then that may be a poorer choice because of that. But then it's all the same games more or less so you can mix and match as you want to anyway.)

I'm thinking about getting Agricola: Farmers of the moor simply because it's only 13-18 euro depending on things. But I don't have Agricola and may not buy it since the university computer club has it. So I don't know whatever that's a smart move

Rune Age would NEED to have an expansion for me to ever buy it.

Many of the deck builders such as Nightfall Coldest war or Thunderstone Advance I would probably had wanted more cards for.
