I'm hopeless. I bought 1812: The Invasion of Canada at my FLGS and played it tonight after saying I was going to stop buying games for a while. But it's just such a super fun light war game (I can barely call it that) that I don't regret it. It's optimal with 2 or 5. I've only gotten in the 2p game, but would like to see how cooperative it is with 5p. What a nice "light" (for a warish game) game.

Ha! We call Through the Desert "Candy Camels"

They are so cute. I love that game. Unfortunately, I feel like no one else likes it because it's too abstract for them.

Sue, I laughed at you being hopeless! I'm afraid that applies to me, too.

But it's too bad you can't get anyone interested in Through the Desert. I have only played 2p so far and can't wait for a 3p game. I just loved all the camels milling about in the 2p game so I am anxious to see more of them in the mix.

This was one of my "gateway" games... well as close as you can get to having one if you were playing Chess before you were 5 years old.

It was one of the first 10 Euros my best gaming buddy ever introduced me too.

And ... It is still a 10 for me. LOVE IT!

Pretty, easy rules, complex play opportunities.

The pastel camels are just a *BONUS*. laugh

We yesterday played Yggdrasil which we won fairly easily. We've won two games now so we're thinking of going towards the more difficult cards whistle

However this win was more than compensated by another loss of Rune Age. Third time in a row that we played this co-op scenario and third time we lost.. We seem to get better, but we're still wiped away by the game before we get to the last round (this time it was quite sudden and unexpected)

Thank you, Sue!! I've been wondering about that game. I play almost exclusively 2p and 5p games these days and it's tough to find a game that is fun in both those settings. How long did your game last?

Heehee, I got this silly mental image of a new forum topic in W+G, games to avoid. I would say it would be all in good fun, and most likely we would have some great debates without telling each other their opinion about a game was wrong. But this is a site to celebrate gaming, so I am torn. It's kind of like the Razzies before the Oscars. Sure, they're fun to read but when it comes to purchasing a game, I want a winner.

A whole day of games yesterday!

Alien Frontiers which has quickly become a favourite of mine! The other players were kind enough to let me get a whole bunch of 1 cost tech cards AND the -1 cost to tech cards colony bonus, bwahahahaaa! Free dice modifiers, plasma cannons and dirt cheap dice recyclers meant that I was able to get go raiding my opponents for loot almost every turn arrrh Unfortunately I was enjoying villainy so much that I was colony behind and paid dearly for it at the end, finishing second yuk

Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery, a first time play for me. Brilliantly each of the four players had a totally different strategy (I went bloodshed and conquest devil) but all finished within 20 VPs of each other. Area control just gave me enough points to squeak into the lead against the Economic empire of second place (we let him get all six sugars AND the rum distillery shake)

El Grande, which is another favourite of mine. Some fortunate cards for me and unfortunate cards for my closest rival meant that I was able to unify Northern Spain and claim the top spot laugh

Core Worlds - a new one to our table. Good fun but I couldn't decide on a strategy and ended up with a mixed bag of a deck which was competent but outclassed by the focused decks of my opponents. I paid for it in the final two turns and finished third out of four soblue

Only 2 hours. I think it could be much shorter if you knew the game. The decks are very small for each faction (60 cards total/5 faction). Your hand size is three per turn, so you can only go so long before the game ends. I think we got to round 6 or 7. (game ends when the allies from one side have played all of their truce cards, one per faction).

The rules are very easy. It's got the fun of dice rolling, but the cards add some level of strategy. Nothing that innovative, but it's definitely a fun one.

This has nothing to do with what you asked but your post made me think of Airlines Europe because it plays 2-5. I've only played 2 & 3p games which are great but every time we play I think of what fun it would be with more players.

Jood, so not helping my buying freeze! Luckily, it's not available here yet so I won't be like a small child tempted by candy when I'm walking around the FLGS. My husband is going to kill me if I bring home one more game (not really, but there will be excessive eye rolling...). Goa is another one I've wanted for a long time but it was out of print.

Now I want that game too!

We've been going through a rather dull rut in the house of trying to tackle our Want to Play list. Game buying is supposed to be on a moratorium until after our next auction but I keep finding ways to sneak them in. Trying to decide between getting Kingdom Builder or 1812 on Tuesday. I think I will probably just have to flip a coin to decide. laugh

I haven't played 1812, but I guess you've read other posts of mine saying how obsessed we are with Kingdom Builder. I got it on the 12th of this month and we've already played it 22 times! That's because it's now my husband's favorite game, too.

That definitely helps, doesn't it! lol

If you ever figure out the secret to consistently matching favorites, let me know

Wow! You guys are killing me with boardgame envy...

I wonder how long it would take for the joy of boardgaming to wear off, if I had unlimited cash and unlimited time??...hmmm...that's a nice problem I'd like to have...

Unfortunately, the odds of having that problem are about as good as the odds of winning the lottery!

Ended up purchasing Kingdom Builder today. In under an hour, we learned the rules and had two 2p games. It was awesome!! I lost the first game soundly, due to some misunderstanding on my part of how the point cards worked. Second game I lost by one measly point!! Those blasted ponies! Curt managed to use his padlock token on the last turn to jump to the final castle. shake

Thanks to all the ladies who recommended this game, mainly Kathy. This is one that definitely lived up to the buzz. It is a fun, light game that plays in less than half an hour; a perfect way to unwind. I am thinking it will probably go over great with our extended family at Christmas.

I am so glad you like it! I hate to gush about a game because everyone's so different and may not like what I like. But I love that it feels like you have really played a good game in such a short time. I like lots of other short games, but they don't give me that same sense of satisfaction I get from playing Kingdom Builder. I'm wondering if it's worth it to get the expansions now.

Started our Saturday night with a 3p game of Kingdom Builder. It was well liked by our friend who played it for the first time. Then we moved onto a few rounds of Hanabi from Hanabi & Ikebana. Excellent co-op style game. Each player has five cards in front of them that they can not see. As a team you try to build sets of fireworks by giving each other information about the cards you can see. We scored 17 first game, then improved to 20, which gave us a rating of excellent both games.

They have released Hanabi as a stand alone game and I really encourage everyone to check it out!
