Other than just the general boardgame abstraction of "the ability to do stuff", is there any thematic description of what Influence is supposed to represent? I could see it as just money/political power, but I can't seem to reconcile why it would pop up in various places on the city/planet or why it requires soldiers to collect.

Not that it matters, but hey, I have to wonder!

I'm guessing it represents a wide variety of things: Arms, goods, "connections" with the right people, clout, etc.

I was going to make a snarky comment, but your microbadges prevented me.

It can represent money, but also supply depots, various personalities from the last regime, etc.

The influence cards themselves provide some thematic explanation of what the influence represents. For example, the card that places influence in the financial districts is called "Financial Coffers" and presumably represents the troops taking control of Mecatol City's finances.

Make Your Own Dice Tower Review: 1. Spill all of the pieces onto a table. 2. Rearrange the pieces, ignoring most of the setup instructions. 3. Say you don't like the game because it makes you think too much.

I think you probably already know it was spice in Dune.
And spice is a drug, so imagine drug wars, or booze during prohibition, etc.

Thematic explanation of influence from FFG:

Also, note that "influence" is one of types of currencies in TI3, so this is no coincidence that Rex also uses influence.

The rulebook at the top of page 8 (Phase 1: Influence) describes it like this:

"Around Mecatol City, many events occur outside of the
great races’ control. These include "Temporary Ceasefires",
influential equipment and missions appearing at specific
locations, and Sol assault crafts sweeping in with
deadly force."

Re: "Influence" huh?
I think of it as money, weapons, secrets, favors, or anything else that would help your race get a strong foothold in the city and acquire power.
