My wife and I have had to fend for ourselves at times and we've played with friends at times. Even with friends though, the game is often not filled up. Anyway, whether we have friends or not, our pattern tends to be to get a game out of the library and I set it up while she campaigns for players. She does NOT just plant the flag and wait. She's doing it old school, waving the box top in the air. And if you so much as pause to look at our table, she's very likely to ask you to play. That said, I confess to a preference for playing with friends. Why? It's just quicker and easier to get things going. Every time we try to recruit on our own, it takes longer to fill the table. Can't really help that, eh? But you know, we have definitely played with some cool strangers. Last year, on the last Sunday we met Drew (?) from Arizona and he played a game with us and then later played a different game with us. I thought he was a fun guy and he was doing the con on his own and having a good time. In the previous year, I remember setting up a game for four friends and a woman saw our game and politely asked if she could play too even though we had no flag up. I don't know if she realized we already knew each other, but she had the chutzpah to ask and I appreciate chutzpah so we dealt her in right away.

I registered and am paying via e-check. Is it weird that I didn't have a confirmation/registration number sent to me?

No, not at all. eCheck can take a few days to process. Once the payment clears, then you will get your confirmation email.

That reminds me, I have a new recipe from our cookbook "To Serve Man" for braised Canadian. Looking forward to the meal and whatever fruity beer you bring.

I just want to go on record as saying, there is more eatin' on Colin than me. If you are going to braise a Canadian, make sure there is enough to go around.

Not if you put curds and gravy over them.

From CaptainQWYX: (HMM.. how do you embed the post you're replying to, all blue-boxed and cool looking, without just cut-and-pasting from it?)

"I just spoke with the reservations manager at the hotel:
d10-1 We've added some rooms to the "shoulder dates" so you should be able to book from the 10th to the 20th. I don't know how many of you are going to book those dates, so it might temporarily "sell out" until more rooms can be added.
d10-2 We've added some king rooms, so it's not all doubles
d10-3 We'll get a better rate on the suites put in there. We didn't originally negotiate a suite rate and so it was reverting to the hotel's default book rate, but it should be better going forward.
d10-4 He's going to add some amenities - early check-in, breakfast, etc. direct from the hotel. Those that are coming up right now are from a 3rd party website and are not always guaranteed."

So I'm confused about this hotel post. We attempted on March 19th to book a double on the link to the Hyatt's BGGcon page, but it indicated they were sold out already. When we called the hotel directly, staff there reported that while there were some king rooms available, that all the double queen rooms at the BBGcon rate had sold out two weeks prior. They offered us the same room at $189+tax. After going out to 3rd party sites and calling back the hotel, we managed to get down to an AAA rate of $170.

Considering they claimed that the doubles had been all gone about a week and a half before you March 14th post RE: hotels, I feel like they were giving us the runaround. Is there anything else we can do?

Maybe the web site kicked back our reservation attempt because we included Tuesday the 13th, and perhaps that was one of the 'Shoulder Dates". But if so, and if those shoulders were temporarily sold out, as you speculated in your post, you'd think that when we called, we would not have been quoted the full $189 for all five nights, or have been informed that we could get a better rate on Tuesday if and when more of shoulder date rooms were opened up.

Just sayin...

Scratch that. Just called the hotel and got it straightened out. I think that while my friend used the Event code on the phone, he must have went through his Hyatt gold membership number thinking it would get him the best service. Not.

AREA?

At the last couple of Cons, there's been the GeekBuzz system - a pool of laptops in the central area where you can rate the games you've played, with a projector showing the top ten.

No. If you want to submit your results for AREA you can, but that's entirely up to you.

Oh! I've seen that. That's the thing that Christoph Waltz did the parody thing on that person's show...

However I would not have guessed that Trololo was a Russian last name whistle

Eduard Khil is the guy who sang that back in the 1970s.

The tune has been dubbed Trololo for obvious reasons...
