This game is fun. Heroscape in space :) In fact my kids call the wretch the Marro.

When will we see an expansion?

The first time I played I thought that the game was fun, but would be perfect with an expansion. I didn't think that the wait would be very long. Unfortunately it seems I am wrong. I hope there's an expansion soon!

Yeah, it almost looks like Hasbro and WotC want to see this die a slow, painful death...

That would be a sad end for sure. I would love to see what the game could have evolved into. I teally think the game title killed sales.

Agreed. The name of the game (which I own and enjoy) is a testament to muddled thinking on the part of Hasbro. The game's name is one which would appear to seek a connection to the mass market - the kind of people that have bought the original "Battleship" at the big box stores like Walmart and Target. However, the game itself (much more involved than original Battleship), the price point ($60 instead of $25), and the channel to market that Hasbro selected for this game (FLGS) point to the hobby game market, aka the people who frequent BGG and FLGS'. For this latter group, the name "Battleship" as best would have been unnecessary to generate interest, and frankly was probably off-putting to many hobby gamers.

You don't have to be a marketing professional (which, by the way, I am) to see how screwed up Hasbro was in their approach to naming, packaging, marketing, pricing, and distributing this game. To Hasbro's effort on Battleship: Galaxies, I can only do this...

I agree about the name - I am one of those who bought and got to like the game despite a bad first impression...

So if I were a Hasbro exec, here's what might be going through my mind;

1. Since we're revamping all our old games (Clue, Risk, ...) we really should do something with Battleship. After all, we've got strong branding behind the name. Everyone's heard of Battleship.

2. We've got Craig Van Ness on board, who's proven his worth with a number of games, including the Heroscape franchise. Perhaps he can breath some life into the old Battleship line.

3. Craig has now created Battleship Galaxies. Production costs seem a bit high. Will it be able to compete with other $60 designer games? Let's release it to specialty game shops, where other games sell for about the same price. We'll study the reviews and the gamer public's acceptance of the game. Prehaps the product will build a strong community on its own (a la Heroscape, LEGO, ...)

4. In order to mass market the revamp of the Battleship line, let's release a Battleship movie (a la Transformers) to boost awareness of the revamp and the direction we want the Battleship line to progress from here on out. We'll sell t-shirts, action figures, video games, and alot of spinoffs. Of course, the movie won't be released until summer 2012.

5. Now that the movie has been released and hype in the mainstream public has been created, let's move the Battleship Galaxies game to Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, and all our other regular distribution channels. Grandma will no longer hesitate to buy grandson a $60 game, since it's based on the movie and the grandson has been asking for it by name.

6. The Battleship revamp has now been successfully entrenched in pop culture. Time to milk it for everything it's worth. "Craig, we need some expansions ... "

Er, well, maybe. What is more likely going through the mind of the Hasbro exec in charge of the Battleship brand...

Probably waiting still on the release of the Sci-Fi Battleship movie.

Though I strongly suspect there will be little or no tie-in.

Galaxies does though feature in Hasbros UNIT*E amalgam of various titles that are due for movie releases or new toy releases.

Well there's an interesting thing... There won't be any more movies, Universal just spent several million dollars getting out of all their board-game tie-in contracts.

Re: Expansion?
As long as I agree that we would all be happy with expansions to Battleship Galaxies, could I also use this thread to, um, beg that we just all pretend that Heroscape was never cancelled and see if Wizards will just please hurry up and release a new master set and expansions? It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and re-release those old expansions, either.

I think I'm giving up. With Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game around the corner and expansions announced along the base game already, there is no reason for me to stick with this still birth (that wasn't even as much of a still birth, but just ... strategically dropped shortly before it saw the light of day).

Because you think the Wretch are over-powered, right?

This game is not broken and the sides are evenly matched. The learning curve for the sides is not.

I agree with that bit, or maybe I was just constantly lucky with the ISN

What makes the game broken to me is that it promises a deck building and a fleet building aspect, and a strategic way of preparing for battle, and those things just don't work with the relatively limited components in the base game. It's permutations of "all ships with this one slightly stronger" or "all ships with that one slightly stronger", instead of "I'll go for tons of squadrons this time" or "I'll take all medium ships and specialize on kiting" or even "hey, two capital ships with a bit of an escort".

Which is quite a letdown with all the promise that the fleet and deck building aspects hold, and the flexibility that the scenarios offer in theory.

QFT

The game is cool, but could be awesome with an exapansion to give more choices in how players constructed their fleets.

It would be nice if somebody from Hasbro/WotC would tell us how many more they need to sell to green-light an expansion or two. I've bought three already (one for myself and two as gifts), but I'd be willing to buy a couple more (as long as most who already own the game are too) if it guaranteed a couple of expansions.

This makes me so sad. Bad branding, great game. A few expansions with some unique alien races and this could really have been a diamond in the rough.

Anyone have any suggestions of similar games that actually have expansions? And possibly firing arcs for capital ships? 8}
