This is a place for those teensy things that just tend to get under your skin a little. Teensy things, not big things.

I wanted to start this for grammar pet peeves, but I figure there are other LITTLE things that are annoying that might be fun to just get out.

Please don't turn this into a giant rant thread though. Just little rants.

So I have a few pet peeves, I am human.

improper use of A and An in books, papers, magazines.

Illinois does NOT have an S sound at the end.

There is no S at the end of Barnes and Noble, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target, Meijer, or a multitude of other stores. There are very few stores that actually end in an S when you think about it. So the rest shouldn't just have them added all the time.

And people who pick on my grammar in casual emails, texts, or instant messages. Just because I use proper grammar in speech and use it well in formal and professional writing doesn't mean that I spell and grammar check my IM's. So no, you didn't GET me, I wasn't TRYING to be proper.

i'm sure there's more, but that's my start.

Personally, I'm annoyed at the fact that the Oxford comma is taught as improper nowadays and is generally ill-used. I think it feels more stylistically correct, looks better, and is clearer in most circumstances.

One of my pet peeves is people who let their toe nails grow long. The moment you see a tiny bit of white they need to be trimmed.

Those graphics remind me of the oatmeal.

My two biggest grammatical pet peeves that just make me want to shake someone REALLY hard are the improper use of apostrophes and the use of the word 'seen' instead of 'saw'.

Really makes me want to scream!

In the same vein, I hate that it is no longer taught, used, or acknowledged by most web-based forums (this one included) that between sentences two spaces are used. It looks cleaner and makes reading easier.

It's not as critical to the meaning as the Oxford comma is, but it still annoys me.

Another Oxford comma fan here, and I always type two spaces between sentences. Unfortunately, the only person who can tell that I type two spaces is me.

One of my pet peeves is people who slow down to think in traffic. You don't need to slow down to think. You don't need to slow down to look at something while you think about it. You don't need to slow down to think about what exit you should be taking right now. You definitely don't need to slow down to merge because you waited too long to think about how you were going to conduct your merge. Everyone around you is travelling at a great rate of speed, and you best act and react quickly.

I know, I still use the two spaces between sentences myself. But one of the tricky things with html, is that no matter how many spaces you put they are always rendered as one, unless you use the & nbsp ; code (with out the spaces).

I don't know if any of you are familiar with a children's clothing store called Bonnie Togs. More than a few members of my family will stick the word "and" in there.

Bonnie = Good. Togs = Clothes. The store is not called "Bonnie and Togs" because that makes as much sense as "Good and Clothes".

Actually, I believe the two spaces between sentences have been declared obsolete.

Edit: Nobody here is using a typewriter or a fixed-width font.

Yes. In a fixed-space font it makes sense, but even early word processors would handle proper spacing after punctuation. So unless you are commenting code in Courier it is obsolete.

On the same subject, what about people who decide that their legs are perfectly adequate for walking until they step foot on the escalator. As if the escalator is some sort of immobilizing device that promotes laziness.

I'm willing to make an exception for people at airports with luggage.

Malls are simply a reminder of how uncourteous other people are. I rarely frequent them.

There are people bumping into you while paying more attention to their texting/phone call. There are people who decide to walk shoulder to shoulder to shoulder to shoulder and take up the entire walkway with their small group. There are people who decide that the middle of the walkway is a great place to stop and chat. There are people who allow their children to run around wildly and then act as if you are an inconvenience for tripping over their trolls-in-training.

That place is a treasure trove of pet peeves.

If you type   (as I did in the quote above) it will come out looking like " " without the spaces. Of course to get " " to look like that I had to type " ", (and so on, ad infinitum).

(Also fixed the extra space in without. )

I use two spaces after punctuation, even if it is obsolete.

I didn't know "Oxford Comma" was a named thing. But now I do and it's certainly the correct way to punctuate lists.

I always thought it was the serial comma.
