I'm sitting at Starbucks, trying to study for my last law school exams, when I get an awesome phone call from my wife:

"Hey babe, if I'm playing solo Agricola, do I need to use two farms, or just one?"

Some background: I've been working hard to get my wife into board gaming. I started with Alhambra (bought on recommendation of FLGS, and we thought it was ok) and then moved on to Dominion (she liked) and Pandemic (so-so). I tried some smaller games, Hive (hated it) and Jaipur (liked it), before I made a big mistake: 7 Wonders. She really hated 7 wonders and got very mad at me for buying too many games and buying games that I knew she wouldn't like. It just had too many symbols for her to digest.

I took a leap of faith about a month ago with Agricola. I didn't know if she would like it or it would be a complete disaster. She normally doesn't like games that are too complicated. We started out with the family version, and she loved the theme (there is a lot of moo-ing and baa-ing at our table), but had a hard time beating me. I noticed, however, that she would talk about it and talk through strategy, which was a very good sign. She eventually started asking me if I wanted to play, which had never happened with any other game. Last night, after 10-15 plays, we played our first full version game. I jumped out to a quick lead, but she bounced back late and beat me by 1 point with a well timed occupation play.

Then, this evening, she calls me for rule clarification because she's playing a solo game! This may be a bit of a "cool story, bro" post, but to all the other gamers out there trying to turn their SO into a gamer, there's hope!

My wife loves Agricola too.

Good luck on your finals. Have you taken the bar exam yet?

Great post. Thanks for sharing. Stories like this do encourage those of us who hope to develop gamers around us. With me, I would love for my daughter to develop a love for gaming. There are so many positives in this hobby.

I'm also attempting to entice my brothers and sisters with their families to become gamers. It's a looooong process.

That's a pretty cool story. I would love it if my wife called me asking for clarification on a game's rules. (She and I play games all the time, but I wouldn't see her doing any of this with out me there.)

Great stuff.

Just cross your fingers that she doesn't enjoy solo Agricola too much, else you might find yourself surplus to requirements...

It's very possible. We play very friendly games right now. Once or twice a game she'll ask me if I'm going to play a certain space this round and I'll tell her yes or no and let her plan accordingly. I always try to win, and I like to win, but in all honesty, losing is winning because it keeps her interested and enthusiastic.

When I got home, she was setting up her second game...
