BGWS 020 - Video exploration of Power Grid (with FF)
On this video of Board Games with Scott, designer Friedemann Friese joins me to talk about Power Grid.

This 26-minute episode has an overview of the game as well as strategy tips by Friedemann and a light review.

I've also put up links to a faster server that I'll use to hold only the most recent episode. This should make for a better downloading experience.

You can get this episode in a number of formats at
http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?p=35

Next week, I'll be taking a look at Cleopatra and the Society of Architects.

(side note - I took the time to first make an uncompressed .avi and then used Divx to make a smaller file. Quicktime got a new version this week, and I could not make a smaller .avi of comparable quality to what I put out here.)

By the way, someone asked about my attire. That's a Utilikilt which I break out at game cons.

So, I guess I should have called the show "Board Games with a Scot" instead.

Looks like your (hosting) server is down Scott - anyway: i'm really lookin' forward to hear you and FF talk about Funkenschlag. I'm expecting a great show as usual

btw: concerning my post in the Spielbox-Forum - one guy from Amigo said that he's going to contact you - did that already happen?

Take care and greetings from germany,
Simon

Wow, that's annoying (regaring the server)

If it's not up later, try

http://quartz.syr.edu/bgws/bgws_020hq.mov (high)

I did get contacted by an Amigo rep; their challenge is international shipping, but I think we've worked something out. Time will tell..

There's a minor goof in the Power Grid video review. At around the 20 minute 30 second mark, you mention that during Step 2 you replace the lowest numbered power plant with a new one. Actually, the game rules state that the highest numbered power plant is replaced during the Bureaucracy phase of both Steps 1 and 2. Only during the Bureaucracy phase of Step 3 is the lowest power plant replaced in the manner you described.

Thanks for catching this. I'll fix it with any other mistakes people find.

(As you can probably tell, I'm not a big fan of all the fiddling about with the power plant market in PG.)

When Step 2 starts, you have a one-time event: throw the lowest-numbered plant out and replace it.

Every turn during Step 1 and Step 2, you put the highest-numbered plant on the bottom of the draw pile.

So it's a little of both.

On the German map Friedman said to determine the connection costs when developing the board he used a real map and counted out the number of rivers and mountains. Wowzers...that's insane...and all along we thought there was some logical information out there. Great stuff to know.

Yeah, I wasn't just feigning interest as the interviewer - I thought that was pretty neat! I wonder if the numbers make sense to our friends from Germany..

Scott--This was one of the best ones yet! I watched it just before playing Power Grid for the first time. It was so helpful! I also really enjoy when you have the designers on. They add a lot of extra flavor to the review. Great job!

Well done Scott! This was the first video I saw of yours and all I can say is Keep up the Great work! Your video blogs are informative, interesting, funny and extremely useful. This one in particular made me go and buy Power Grid and it is now the game my Wife and I play on a regular basis. Please keep producing these!

PS what is the name of your "Furry" mentioned in the Fury of Dracula video??

Thanks for the great feedback. It's nice when I can manage to have time with a designer. I've got a few more of these on tape that will be coming out over the next few months.

(p.s. My critter doesn't have a name. )
