BGWS 024 - Die Macher Video exploration
Yes, you read that right... it's the game I've gotten the most requests to cover:

I decided to take on Die Macher this week for Board Games with Scott.

This is a long episode - about an hour, with file sizes to match - but this game deserves it.

You can view this episode at
http://www.boardgameswithscott.com/?p=40

Enjoy!

(n.b. BGWS is a few days early this week as I'm heading to Dexcon...)

Scott,

Thanks for this video, I just taught my group to play but they could use a refresher before we play again. This is just the thing.

Keep up the GREAT work, I surely appreciate it. Maybe I'll see you the WBC again this year.

Also loved the double zero roll.

Nice work, and shows me that I've been playing slightly wrongly with regards to media markers shake

Excellent job! I've read as much as humanly possible on this game, but never had the chance to play it. Someday....someday...

I gotta give you props for this one too, Scott.

After hearing about this game for so long, it was very interesting to get a better idea of how it plays. You did a very excellent job of de-mystification. thumbsup

Oh if only this video were out BEFORE I played my first game a couple of weeks ago! We started at 5:30pm and finished at 1:00am. The first 1.5 hours was game explanation so this would have certainly taken the edge off of the startup.

Excellent review Scott, I am confident it would have been all I needed to start my first game.

Very nice! It's the first BGWS I've seen, and I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth it looks. I will now need to catch up.

I didn't have time to see the whole thing; I only saw the beginning and end. I'm just curious; do you go over the endgame scoring?

Briefly... like everything else. But it's in there.

Wow - great job Scott! I think that's my favorite of your videos yet (and I've seen them all.)

In the past, your review of long & heavy games such as Indonesia made me decide that the game looked fun, but is probably too long & heavy for the people I game with to play. With Die Macher, it looks definitely too long & heavy, but I think I'll get it anyway, it just looks too fun to pass up!

Excellent Scott. Congratulations.

Above everything else, I think we're all very proud for having you here. Because you can reach something with your videos that we can only dream about.

And thank you for helping us how to play this wonderfull game.

You're the Macher.

Wow, I could finaly get a grap on what rule R5.32.2 is really all about

You know, a video review of the Starter Kit #1 sounds feasable. Somehow I don't think it's up Scott's alley though.

Okay, I've been tempted many times with past BGWS episodes, but this one clinched it: I'm transcoding it to SVCD. However, I just know I'm going to lose some quality in doing so.

Scott, have you considered offering any other formats besides Quicktime? It's a real pain to transcode, and no standalone players support it. Contrastingly, almost every DVD player supports SVCD (Which is just a low-bitrate MPEG2), and a lot of devices support XVid and other similar codecs.

A few notes:

- The VLC Media player (free) plays quicktime quite well.
- Yes, I've tried playing with Xvid /Dvix and a few other formats, and I ended up not saving much file size and taking a lot of time. In addition, I've had problems in the past with getting files made using older Xvid codecs to play. I've decided to just keep it simpler, although I know I will be losing some people in making these choices. I feel that 4 different formats is enough.

and...

- I am planning to put all these out on DVD to help fund equipment for the show. We're finishing up the cover art for the first DVD (Episodes 1-9 and Aqudukt), and it will be available soon. So, then anyone can watch it on a standalone player.

Your reviews are always to the point and pitch perfect!

I also want to thank you Scott! I have not watched it yet, but I had great success using your Antike video to teach the game and it sounds like this will be another great tool!

This goes beyond just being a nice review. It is a service to us all (or at least all of us who might want to play die Macher!)
