Dice Hate Me

I’m Chris. I play games. Lots and lots of games. I created Dice Hate Me as a place where I can talk about and review games, preview upcoming titles, write ridiculous and (sometimes) humorous things, and generally spread some paper and boardgaming love. Dice Hate Me is more than just a title, though – it’s a gaming lifestyle. You see, I have really bad dice karma. I’m pretty lucky in life, but hand me a pair of dice in a game and I’m dead meat. I’m the guy that always lands on Boardwalk when somebody owns it. I’m the guy that never gets a Yahtzee. Yeah, I’m the guy that avoids the craps table in Vegas as if it were a minor demon. Still, even though dice hate me, I love them. The little bastards.

In this episode of The State of Games, we take a look back on our past month of constant on-the-road adventures at various cons, such as WBC and GenCon, and special gaming events like a Celebration of Gaming at Labyrinth Games in Washington, DC. We share tales of unpublished prototypes like Paul Owens' meaty and fulfilling East India Company, getting to see how Ben Rosset's The Market has morphed into Nevermore Games' Mars Needs Mechanics, and how far Clever Mojo Games' Princes of the Dragon Throne has come since Origins. All this, plus Dice's constant name-dropping from GenCon, how Monkey has a vendetta against games that feature "cards with words," the joys of sharing brownie sundaes, VivaJava demos, Jason Kotarski's joys of hauling, and a look at Smash Up, Seasons, Morels, and Vegas!

In this episode of The State of Games, we take the show back to formula with some straight talk about the possible joys and pitfalls of culling a game collection according to The Jones Theory, as well as a discussion on game criticism, positivity and a call for some revised semantics. All this, plus wild west brutality in Revolver, some honest-to-meeple goodness in Tournay, a trip to Vegas, and how one Omega Virus doesn't necessarily equal a Dragonheart.

This episode of The State of Games is jam-packed with gaming goodness, as we sit down with John Moller of Cartrunk Entertainment and Compounded designer Darrell Louder to talk about their experiences at Origins Game Fair 2012, the wonderful things happening in the realm of unpublished games, and the history of Compounded and how it wound its way into the heart of Dice Hate Me Games. All this plus talk of Sentinels of the Multiverse, Take the Bait, Princes of the Dragon Throne, Forge, Awesome Possum, an amazing new trucking game from Jason Kotarski, the joys of Felicia Day, and how John almost put out Wil Wheaton's eye with a poker chip. It's a long one, but if the big blue noodle has taught us anything it's that size doesn't matter.

There are many divisive subjects within the realm of the board game hobby, but none seem as bold nor more passionately discussed than luck. Luck defines genres, often determines the difference between abstract and Ameritrash, and, for some, can determine whether a game is fun or a flop. In this very special episode of The State of Games, we are joined by veteran Kickstarter patriarch and storytelling game entrepreneur Daniel Solis in a rousing discussion about the role of luck amidst role-playing and tabletop games. All this plus Carnival, Fleet, Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple, VivaJava, and other Kickstarter darlings!

Sharing even more about game design is Touko Tahkokallio - the designer of the smash hit Eclipse - in an exclusive interview with Matt Morgan from MTV Geek. All this, plus looks at the current Kickstarter projects Chicken Caesar and Fleet, as well as the out-of-control Masters of Commerce and some very naughty nuns on the run!
